I always get a good giggle when my children ask me how it is possible for someone to be a {couch potato} or how a book can be as {flat as a pancake}. Children have the problem with seeing things literally instead of in the light they are meant to be seen. Idioms are meant to be silly ways for an individual to express themselves. I personally am a very logical and literal person so I tend to interpret things as such. Idioms are something that I have always struggled with as a person. I understand the concept and how they work and their purpose. But it is difficult for me to agree that they ultimately make sense. This book is rather creative and it takes some of the more popular idioms and puts them to illustration to show children just how silly they are. This book would be a wonderful addition to any teacher/ homeschooling parent or libraries shelves. It is a wonderful learning tool in my opinion. An entertaining introduction to idioms. As with Oelschlager's other idiom books ([b:Eye to Eye: A Book of Body Part Idioms and Silly Pictures|21814509|Eye to Eye A Book of Body Part Idioms and Silly Pictures|Vanita Oelschlager|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1400835935s/21814509.jpg|41081545] and [b:Birds of a Feather: A Book of Idioms and Silly Pictures|6506031|Birds of a Feather A Book of Idioms and Silly Pictures|Vanita Oelschlager|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328763826s/6506031.jpg|6697622]), some of the illustrations and explanations are better than others, but kids will enjoy it nonetheless. Note: I received a digital copy of this book through NetGalley. I read the book, in exchange for an honest review from netgalley.com. The cover of the book grabbed me at first. The book discusses silly food idioms, such as "flat as a pancake" or "the big cheese". The illustrations by Robin Hagan was amazing. I loved them. THe illustrations were colorful, graphic, funny, and comical. The book also discusses what idioms are. Oelschlager's book "Life is a Bowl Full of Cherries," just recently become available on mainstream book sites. Designed in a format similar to a counting book or ABC book, this book has a non-linear format that focuses on showing idioms to children in a literal way. Clearly, the book is designed to show that idioms are figures of speech, but some of the idioms may be ones that younger children have never hear of ("Cold Turkey", for example). One of the greatest issues I had with the book was to identify what an idiom actually meant, you had to look at very small print that was upside on the bottom of the page (or, in my case, I had to turn my computer upside down to view it). Robin Hegan, the illustrator, does a nice job illustrating each idiom, adding human like characteristics to each image, but the book manages to fall short. The book could be used as an aid in instruction on idioms, but it would not be a good teaching tool on it's own. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
