Un libro compilato in 20 anni di lavoro, un'opera enorme che parla di famiglia, di lavoro e del passaggio del tempo. I due fratelli protagonisti descrivono due mondi che si incontrano e scontrano, due punti di vista complementari che rendono chiaro, casomai ce ne fosse bisogno, che la realtà non è mai una sola. Bellissimo, un nuovo esempio di come in questi anni il fumetto stia raggiungendo vette narrative davvero alte (Chris Ware, Nick Drnaso, Emil Ferris, Adrian Tomine, Dash Shaw, la lista è destinata ad allungarsi). Ventiladores Clyde, en su página 37, contiene un monólogo extraordinario que resume la filosofía del libro y, tal vez, la del autor; en cualquier caso, una forma concreta y nostálgica de entender la vida: “Cuando uno se hace viejo, no cambia. […] No, es el mundo el que cambia.”
Una historia intimista, pulcramente dibujada y presentada en un evocador bitono.
Una historia triste pero sublimada por la esperanza de quien sabe que, mientras resistamos en pie, aún no se ha acabado la partida.

A very melancholy story so far, broken into two parts focusing on the lives of a pair of brothers who never quite made it as salesmen, flogging electric fans all over Canada in the late twentieth century. Not as humorous as Seth's Wimbledon Green (which I also enjoyed) but a very powerful and moving story. The second part of the story focuses on Simon Matchcard and his futile attempts to become a salesman, while the first part presents his brother Abe's recollections on a failed business and his attempts to understand his brother Simon. On one level, it's a fairly depressing story, but on another level, Simon's story comes across as a sort of internal triumph over failure - in the face of something he's just not capable of doing (sales), he finds another outlet for his energy and passion. A deeply moving work, and highly recommended! ( )
