I found this book interesting and difficult to read by turns. The writing felt as if it was not only translated from another language but also - quite frequently - I felt that the author was from a totally different culture to mine.
Jacobs' research does show the tenacity of people's desires to explore sex and sexuality, despite the very restrictive objectives of China's governance. The last chapter on Cosplay and how that intertwines with explorations of gender and sexuality left me a bit confused.
On the whole, I'd say this book presents interesting ideas and research, albeit hidden under confused writing and presentation. ( )
