NCLA Review: This book by psychologists/therapists husband and wife team Drs. Leslie and Les Parrott breaks down many of the myths of online dating, discusses whether it is right for you, and then gives a guide on how to go about it. What makes this book different from other such guides is the focus given to faith and how to connect with other Christian singles. I’ve been married for almost 14 years—my second marriage—so I really don’t need to try the online dating scene. But I have a couple friends who have tried it in the past. Although it was back when it was fairly new and the perception was that you were desperate. It seems times have changed according to Dot.com Dating.

This was a very interesting and easy book to read. The Parrotts did a very good job in covering the different points of online dating. Most of them are pretty basic and logical. They dispel myths of online dating, giving the reader points to think about if online dating is right for them, and goes over the questions you should ask before signing up with an online dating site.

There are no revelations in the book. Most of the information is common sense, but it’s a good reminder. There are really no specifics about pros and cons of various websites or a list of highly rated websites—I kind of thought there might be. Where do you even begin looking for a reputable site? Google it?

According to the book, no. It almost felt like a marketing book with numerous references to their online dating site http://www.myrightsomeone.com/. The entire last chapter is about why they founded the site.

Even with the self-promotion, it’s a good book to read if you’ve never tried online dating and are leery about it. But once you’ve tried it, the book really won’t be of much help. I give it a 3-star rating based on that and the marketing aspect.

Part one of the book is devoted to dispelling the various myths that are attached to online dating. The first is that online dating carries an embarrassing stigma. In the past it may have, but not anymore. We are now living in a society where the internet is a major part of our everyday lives. It is only natural for us to meet people in an area where we feel the most comfortable. Besides that myth, they dispel 5 other myths as well.

The second part of the book deals with knowing whether or not online dating is for you. There are six ways to know. The first is that you are tired of waiting for that person to find you. It’s time to take action in your own hands. Don’t go trolling the bars and picking up people who are not dating material. Instead, carefully screen people through online dating sites.

The last part of the book is a list of five questions that you should ask before signing up for a service. One such question is whether or not that specific site is dedicated to helping you find true love. Not all sites are dedicated to this. Some merely just want to get you matched up for a date. There is a complete difference between being matched for a date and being matched for life.

This book helps to arm the reader with knowledge so that they can make the most of their online dating experience. I know that I learned quite a lot from it.
