This book provides librarians with guidance and suggestions for developing technology-based youth programs grounded in the building of literacy skills. Topics covered within this book include: why libraries should offer technology-based programs; how to develop such programs; how to gain organizational, administrative, and staff support for these programs; how to deal with potential challenges; and how, when, and where to hold such programs. Many pages within the book are also devoted to describing how libraries can create technology-based programs centered upon the child-friendly programming software known as Scratch. Although the authors state that they have decided to include Scratch over other kinds of programs because they have found Scratch to be the “most flexible and scalable by a range of staff,” these pages of the book may not offer much to librarians not interested in using Scratch. However, even these librarians will find portions of this book helpful, particularly those about why to offer technology-based programs and how to go about doing so. A list of resources provided in the back of the book with books and websites about technology-based programs and libraries and literacy in the 21st century is particularly helpful.
