Forty years ago, most Americans said they didn't know anyone who was homosexual and claimed to know little or nothing about homosexuality. Today, there's hardly a sitcom without a prominent gay character, movies like Milk and Brokeback Mountain have won Oscars, and even People magazine celebrated the marriage of Ellen Degeneres and Portia DeRossi. A Queer Thing Happened to America chronicles the amazing transformation of America over the last forty years, and addresses the question head-on: Is there really a gay agenda, or is it a fiction of the religious right? Written in a lively and compelling style, but backed with massive research and extensive interaction with the GLBT community, this forthright and yet compassionate book looks at the extraordinary impact gay activism has had on American society. This could easily be the most controversial book of the decade. Read it and find out why the publishing world was afraid to touch it.

Michael Brown's analysis of the homosexual movement in America is exceedingly well documented and enlightening. This is clearly a man who cares about the people about which he is writing, and yet strongly believes that homosexuality is sinful and harmful.

This is not a theological work. There is Scripture in this book, but Brown's approach is one of sociological analysis rather than theological. This is perhaps a weakness in the book, but the conclusion he reaches is clear despite this -- there has to be some basis of morality firmer than just our own desires and feelings.

The book is written for Christians who are perhaps ignorant of what is happening in American culture when it comes to homosexuality, and also may be reeling from all of the changes that have taken place in the last fifteen years. It is written to better inform us of the issues and why they are so important. The book succeeds incredibly on this front. You leave this book with a much greater understanding of the gay culture and how much America is changing to cater to this group.

And you are ultimately left with great sympathy for a country that is collapsing into moral oblivion. Certainly there are a few villains in this book, but the homosexuals we meet in every day life are not counted amongst them. The sense you get from this book is heartfelt pity.

Brown does not offer a solution per se. He advocates that Christians should get involved to serve the homosexual but oppose the agenda. He does not give us a terribly good picture of what that looks like. Since this is not a theological book, there is not a strong sense of the Gospel offered for even the homosexual. But there is a Gospel call for all people, to repent from your sins and have faith in Jesus, who died for the sins of those who would believe. That is the ultimate answer to not just this issue, but all moral issues. We need more Jesus. ( )
