NCLA Review -Comprising nine chapters, this book deals with a number of science and faith based issues including such topics as the age of the earth and the fine tuning of the fundamental constants of the universe, but with a primary emphasis on a more detailed discussion of evolution. As such the book is basically a continuation and further explication of ideas originally proposed and discussed at length in Collins’ previous book “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief” with a special emphasis on his concept of BioLogos—an explanation of evolution which attempts to marry science and religion. The writing is concise and clear and the authors’ ideas are presented with rigor but without requiring a degree in philosophy for understanding. Both of the authors have impeccable scientific credentials; Giberson has a PhD. in physics and Collins is the current director of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and was the Director of the Human Genome Project. Libraries which have Collins’ earlier book will likely wish to include this one in their collection as well. While there is some duplication of information as would be expected from the similarity in topics, the new information in this book would be worth the purchase. Rating: 3 —RMF ( )

There is plenty more that is wrong with this book, but I think you get the idea. In the end there is not a single thought or example here that is original, and Collins and Giberson repeatedly fail to grapple with the real concerns people have about evolution. All is standard boilerplate, about how to read the Bible, or resolve the problem of evil, or preserve notions of human specialness, or to protect any meaningful role for religion in modern life. They will need to do better if they really want to persuade sincere Christians that their worries about evolution are unfounded.
