Days after reading this, I still have mixed feelings about this book. I have a hard time deciding on my rating and if I "Liked" it or not. I did like it, but I did have a hard time reading it.

Many different reviews described this perfectly by saying that it is like seeing that a train wreck is about to occur, but curiosity keeps you watching just to see how bad the crash actually is. I couldn't help but find myself wanting to scream at the pages at Mary to get real and grow up and open your eyes!

If I understand correctly, this is a true story of the author's earlier life experiences. I was little taken aback by the title though. Even though Mary did drink quite frequently, and I think allowed Jake to influence her drinking and activities more than she would have would he not have came into her life. But anyway, she did drink frequently, however, I think the story only mention Sherry a time or two and referenced Narcotics a time or two as well, so I wasn't sure why there was such an influence for the title.

I was taken aback at the ending of the story. I felt like it was left a little too open. I get the premise of the ending showing that she felt like she could move on with the way her life turned out and that everything would turn out okay in the end. I just wish that maybe even a page or so more, so we could have learned where Mary decided to go from there, beyond knowing that she would move on!

I did have difficult in the actual reading of this story, with some typo's (even though the ones in the emails kept the story realistic. My biggest qualm about the book was that there were no page numbers, however, my rating absolutely was not affected by the fact that there were no page numbers. ( )

Sherry & Narcotics is an outstanding debut novel by author, Nina- Marie Gardner.

Intelligently written with not one word wasted, Gardner has created a fictionalized version of her own experiences with addiction, a love affair gone wrong with a well known writer, and feeling purposeless in a foreign country.

This debut novel is a gritty examination of a young woman's enthrallment to her addiction. Mary is a former graduate student eking out an existence in London writing college application essays for foreign students and struggling to stay sober. After being contacted online by Jake, a charming poet and actor, she soon begins an intense correspondence. Captivated by Jake, Mary moves north to Manchester and embarks on a dissolute affair. Addiction quickly returns to her life as her dishonest relationship with Jake becomes entwined with her alcoholism. Told through a combination of emails, text messages, and emotionally intimate scenes, the book is a stylistically daring character study.
Gardner does an excellent job of taking readers into the mind of an addict; the isolation and paranoia Mary's alcoholism creates are expertly captured. Readers who enjoy dark contemporary fiction will find much to savor in this novel.

This superbly written, gritty story centers around online editor Mary and the gradual train wreak she makes of her life through drug addiction and poor relationship choices while living and working in England. Sparse, taut prose makes Mary’s situation spring to life with frightening clarity...

Critics who believe that the internet has killed the epistolary novel should read Sherry and Narcotics. Communication between individuals is the prime driver of story and character arc; and, for the novelist, one of the hardest things to get right. But Gardner understands how people speak and write. She knows every tic and quaver of an individual voice, and the result is so good it’s unnerving, a soul-signature replicated on the page.
