This story proves how wonderfully supportive friends can be. Even though Wagner is scared and embarrassed over having to wear new glasses, his friends come through and show him it's not a big deal at all. Perfect for level 2 beginning readers.

For kids who are fearful or reluctant to get glasses, here's a humorous story of Wagner who's having trouble reading the chalkboard and who ends up having to get glasses. The concerns of appearance and teasing are gently addressed with humor and truth. The last page includes very basic tips for eyeglass care.

This book is about a little boy who has to get glasses after taking a sight test at school. He is embarrassed to have to wear glasses but his friend and teacher help him see that it is not so bad. This story is great for children that are in a similar situation. It can help them understand that it is not bad to need glasses. It can also be used with children to help them understand that their differences make them unique and they should be proud of their differences. The images in this book are warm and colorful which draws in the reader. It is a great beginning chapter book for readers.

This picture chapter book is great for students who are ready to dive into more advanced books. Not only does it provide pictures for the text, but it also teaches a valuable lesson; friendship. In the story Pearl's friend Wagner needs to get glasses, however Wagner is defiant and does not want the glasses because he does not want to get made fun of or look different. When Wagner wears his glasses to school most of the children tell him he looks cool and smart, until one kid calls him four eyes. Wagner immediately gets discouraged, but all his friends pick him back up! They tell him things like "I have a scarf so I'm two necks" and "I have on boots so I am four feet" so on and so forth. Soon Wagner realizes that its just a mean name and it doesn't mean anything, because his friends like him for him! This is a valuable lesson for children to learn, especially when peer pressure and cliques begin in the upper elementary grades. Children need to learn that just because a student is different looking, it does not mean that there is anything wrong with him. Another valuable lesson is that of friendship, and picking your friends up when they are down, just as Wagner's friends did with him in the story. His friends encouraged him to keep his glasses and be himself. ( )
