A USA Today Bestseller!

"Hollick does a remarkable job of bringing to life a little known but powerful queen... an absorbing plot that never lags over the course of a fat, satisfying book."â??Publishers Weekly

Sometimes, a desperate kingdom is in need of one great woman

Saxon England, 1002. Not only is Ã?thelred a failure as King, but his young bride, Emma of Normandy, soon discovers he is even worse as a husband. When the Danish Vikings, led by Swein Forkbeard and his son, Cnut, cause a maelstrom of chaos, Emma, as Queen, must take control if the Kingdom-and her crown-are to be salvaged. Smarter than history remembers, and stronger than the foreign invaders who threaten England's shores, Emma risks everything on a gamble that could either fulfill her ambitions and dreams or destroy her completely.

Emma, the Queen of Saxon England, comes to life through the exquisite writing of Helen Hollick, who shows in this epic tale how one of the most compelling and vivid heroines in English history stood tall through a turbulent fifty-year reign of proud determination, tragic despair, and triumph over treachery.

If the epitaph "Forever Queen" was to apply to anyone in history, Emma of Normandy would certainly be a top contender. Married at a young age to the Anglo-Saxon King Aethelred the Unready, she managed to maintain her status as the crowned Queen of England after an invasion by forging an alliance with one of the Danish leaders, a man who became her second husband Cnut, and eventually she cleared the way for her sons by Cnut and Aethelred to succeed to the English throne. Emma is key to understanding English history in the decades leading up to 1066 and is one of the rare medieval women about which more than just a few basic facts are known. I appreciated this novelization of her and how it delved into the motivations and emotions of historical figures from so long ago. This book is highly recommended for those interested in medieval English history. ( )

Enjoyed getting to know this new [to me] author = this book focuses on Emma of Normandy, brought to England to wed the Anglo-Saxon king and her years as his wife and then as the wife of Cnut, the Danish successor - all before the Norman Conquest. ( )

What I want in good historical fiction is a character that comes alive on the pages, accurate research and period detail with descriptions of settings, food, costumes, armour etc. and a story that keeps me interested while still providing me with good historical background. The Forever Queen by Helen Hollick provided all these and kept me enthralled throughout most of the book. My only complaint is the sheer length of this book, at over 600 pages, there were times that I felt perhaps too much detail was being provided.

Emma of Normandy was a fascinating character. Sent to England at fourteen, married to an uncaring and brutal man she still managed to grow into her position as a strong Queen of England. After Aethelred the Unready’s death, Cnut the Dane invaded and took Emma as his wife. He knew that having her at his side would secure his claim upon the crown. This marriage was a happy one and Emma learned how to use her power for herself and for England. Although there were many claimants to the throne upon Cnut’s death, Emma involved herself in political intrigues and worked steadily to get first her son by Cnut upon the throne followed by Edward, her son by Aethelred.

The Forever Queen details her life in great detail. As a woman who was married to two kings and a mother of two more, she influenced the course of a nation for many years and author, Helen Hollick blends the known facts with fiction to make this memorable character from the 11th century into a flesh and blood woman. I really enjoyed this story about the life of Queen Emma, even though I'm not very familiar with this period in English history. Despite the vast cast of characters and lots of unfamiliar names, the storyline never got confusing and held my attention from beginning to end. Well written, well researched and just the right balance of politics and personal life. I can't wait for the next book in the series! ( )

Emma was uncertain whether it was a growing need to visit the privy or the remaining queasiness of mal de mer, seasickness, that was making her feel so utterly dreadful.
