Short story woven around the true story of England 's Brostal system for young criminals and the use of Suffolk Punch horses in the British Army. A grandfather tells his life story to his grandson: growing up after WWII he was constantly in trouble, expelled from school into a life of crime, finally sent to prison where the chance to work with horses changed his life. Great illustrations, by Michael Foreman, lift a simple tale. One of the great partnerships in children's literature, this is the twenty-thrid collaboration between Morpurgo and Foreman. Lovely book of a lad's growing up and overcoming his bad reputation. A good man for a mentor and working with horses awaken his better self. A book of hope and second chances. Very encouraging. Wonderful illustration and a great section at the back to explain the facts behind the story. I would have loved this as a child. I really liked finding out about things in the books that I read that I didn't understand. This has these answers at the back of the book. The only thing I would have added would be a list of books to continue my exploration. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

There's no two ways about it: when I was young I was a bad lad.' Everyone thinks this lad is bad, even him. So it’s no surprise when he’s sent to Hollesley Bay Borstal.'But then he starts to work in the prison stable, gaining the trust of the horses and the respect of Mr Alfie, and something begins to change... Together, Morpurgo and Foreman have weaved an inspiring tale about what happens when you show someone how to follow their dreams. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

From what I remember, the title is a line from a character in the book who considers the main character as a good egg despite the latter's reputation of being a "bad boy".
The ending part is what we usually consider as a redeeming moment for the protagonist.
May reread this when I feel nostalgic about fake memories of the past...
