The AAUW BOOKFAIR is an annual six day sale of approximately 75,000 used books donated by the public throughout the year. Booklovers come from all over the Southeast to attend this event. The 50th Annual Bookfair is sponsored by the three local branches: Atlanta, Cobb County, and North Fulton.

Preview Night: Tuesday, 09/22/09 from 6 PM to 9 PM ($10 admission).

The sale continues Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 AM through 9 PM. The final day is Sunday from 12 Noon to 6 PM. Sunday, all books are half price. There is no admission fee Wednesday through Sunday.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Founded in 1881, AAUW is the oldest and largest national organization working for the advancement of women. Nationwide there are over 160,000 members in 1600 branches.

Membership is open to anyone with a four-year college degree or associates degree.

National Fellowships, Grants, and Awards: The largest portion of the monies earned at Bookfair are given to the AAUW Educational Foundation For fellowships and Grants and to the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. The AAUW National Educational Foundation program is the oldest fellowship program for women, having granted the first one in 1888. Nationally, grants of more than $3 million were distributed in 2002-2003 to outstanding women. Ten Georgians are benefiting from this year’s funding. Six grant recipients are studying in Atlanta area universities, and three women have received Community Action Grants for community projects in Georgia.

Local Women’s Scholarships: Some proceeds from Bookfair support local scholarships for deserving women attending a college or university in the Atlanta area. These scholarships are for women over 30 years of age continuing their education on the undergraduate level. Applications are available at the financial aid office of area schools.

Community Projects: All three Atlanta area AAUW branches provide funding to community groups that reflect our goals. Recent awards have supported AAUW "Sister-to-Sister" workshops for middle school girls; "Woman to Woman" workshops; Sally Ride Science Camp at Agnes Scott College; Atlanta Girls School; GARAL Peer Mentors program; Trust Georgia's Woman Symposium; Juvenile Justice Funds; Angela's House; Raksha Inc., benefitting South Asain girls & women; and Woman's Policy Education Fund. In addition, donations of books have been made to several non-profit Thrift Stores in the Atlanta area.
