I think we're supposed to assume that the AFR initiated a serious conflict, toppling the Gentle govt. Recall the fighter jet that comes speeding across the sky as Hal is being loaded onto the ambulance at the beginning of the book? That would be a really odd detail to add unless Wallace were implying that something big involving the military were going on.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. I still think Orin's the guy making all the copies. I'm going to have to think about it some more.

As for Québecois accents, I don't speak French, but I can definitely distinguish between Parisian French accents and Québecois. To my ear, at least, Québecois French sounds like sort of an irritating caricature of the way French sounds to non-French speakers, if that makes any sense.

Kid with box on his head at hospital I also took to be the kid from the end of the world game.

The knife/mirror stuff suggests to me this is not a pipe/Magritte. Not sure that goes anywhere...

I need to read that essay. And then re-read IJ.

Fascinating stuff, pyro.

My head is spinning, if I may riff off of katieinseattle's post from nearly two years ago, considering J.O.I.s "eliminating his own map" in the context of these essays you've linked.

There's so much more to mine in this book ...

In the very first para of the book he has his "Uncle Charles, Mr de Lint and...." Charles de Lint writes urban fantasy, lives in ......TORONTO. I am assuming there are 'no accidents' in the whole of IJ. So I was immediately 'alert' as Dave Barry would say. I apologize if someone else mentioned it already. Also has anyone a theory for 'why' the Canadian thing?

Is anyone at present reading IJ - I need someone to read it with me, or maybe I'll join up make my own thread here and all you experts can come and set me straight...... Yes that's what I will do. I don't have to worry about spoiling here, I don't think!

Canada plays a multitude of central roles in the novel you'll soon discover, sibyx. Look forward to hearing about your progress in the novel.

p.16 - p.17 Wayne wearing a mask does not make him to be on the other side along with AFR. On p.941 Himself is buried in annulation-zone on the Canadian side, so 1) the air can be toxic, so all three should be masked, or 2) Wayne can't show his face in Canada.
