http://libwww.freelibrary.org/closing/

All Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closed, Effective Close of Business October 2, 2009.

In addition, all library materials will be due on October 1, 2009. This will result in a diminishing borrowing period for books and other library materials, beginning September 11, 2009. No library materials will be able to be borrowed after September 30, 2009.

I twittered this, and it was retweeted extensively. (My biggest tweet ever, I think.) However, I think I should have contextualized it more. Basically, it's a game of chicken. The library is threatening to close to force the PA legislature's hand. It may happen, but it's not a simple matter of "we're closing." It's more like "buy this magazine or we shoot this dog."

True enough, but we are close enough to the scheduled closing that it may not be avoided, because the legislature, the governor, city council, the mayor, and PICA must sign off on any budgets before the funds would flow for the libraries and other city services.

Interesting that this may be the only time that the FLP gets most of its books back out of circulation.
