Back in those dark days before internet shopping, the Science Fiction Book Club was a handy way to get a supply of the stuff.
I grew up in a town without a bookstore; by the time I was in high school, I was reading about a book a day, and needed some way of getting my hands on SF. So the SFBC was a lifesaver.
I was a member from roughly 1971 to about 1980. Their "six-books-for-a-dollar" introductory offer was a big deal. (Once I reached adulthood, I could drive myself to bookstores, and the need wasn't as desperate.)
But the SFBC has always provided hardcover books for slightly more than the cost of a paperback. (Today, I think their standard selection is now $9.99, at a time when a new paperback is typically $7.99.)

I was a member in the mid-1960s (my mid-teens) through the early 1970s. Got the Foundation Trilogy for my membership offer. I remember getting The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Orphans of the Sky, Voyage of the Space Beagle, ... I should stop.
