Manga Suitable for High Schoolers

I'm currently trying to pick out manga for a public high school library. The only problem is that it can have any nudity or overtly sexual themes. I'm having trouble coming up with some titles. Can any of you recommend manga that both male and female teenagers will like?

Naruto, Bleach, Fruits Basket, Fellmetal Alchemist, and Death Note seem to be some of the popular most popular manga right now. I can't guarantee no nudity, but I think all of those are acceptable for a high school library. Hellsing is a great manga that our library is doing a program with right now. Hana-kimi, Ouran High School Host Club, and Nana may also be titles to look into as manga readers usually tend to be girls. xxxHolic, and Tsubasa are Clamp titles that I enjoyed, as well as Cardcaptor Sakura. If you want shorter series try Imadoki, Ultramaniac, Wolf's Rain, or Princess Tutu.

Well, let's see. Naruto has "sexy no jutsu" (or ninja centerfold, in the English translation). That involves naked girls. Bleach has a couple naked girls later on as well. Fruits Basket has naked transformation scenes left and right. That takes out three of the biggest titles in the English manga industry right now simply on the nudity count. However, I don't think that any of them are unsuitable for a high school library.

Prince of Tennis might be worth looking into--it's been given an "all ages" rating from Viz. Downside being that it's a long-running title. From Far Away and W Juliet are two good possibilities. Each series is 14 volumes long, and both have been completely released in English at this point. Oh, Hikaru no Go is another title you might want to look into, and at present Black Cat has nothing objectionable in it.

Otogi Zoshi is a two-volume prequel to an anime of the same name, and the story is well-wrought. +Anima is another title being released by Tokyopop that has a good story to it.

It's hard to guarantee that any series will be completely devoid of objectionable content, simply because different people will look at the same element in different ways. I mean, look at all the Harry Potter controversies.

A couple more CLAMP titles that may fit what you're looking for is Magic Knight Rayearth, and Angelic Layer. Azumanga Daioh is a short series, with four volumes in total. Full Moon by Arina Tanemura might fit what you're looking for as well.

Sorry I read too fast and didn't see the thing about any nudity. I believe that while, yes all of those titles do have some nudity, they should be be perfectly fine in a high school library. If I can read "classics" with rape, incest, and abuse in high school, I should also be able to pick up a manga, that might imply that someone was naked. You are probably going to get some parents that will complain no matter what you pick. Oh my, this has demons in it, we can't have that! Most, if not all manga is clearly labeled with the appropriate reading age. It is not the library's job to censor material, and that is exactly what I would tell any parent that has a complaint.

Also I am sorry if I came off as mad at you. I am not, as I agree with you, but not with ordering only "safe" materials for a high school library.

Lots of the people in the anime club at my old high school were into Rurouni Kenshin and Wolf's Rain. Well, this is among other things, but I'm just picking out some of the ones I liked. I also agree with Jencatd about Azumanga Daioh.

I think I'll have to put in another vote for xxxHOLiC, since that's not sexual, but it is just the right amount of humor and creepiness and wonder to interest a teenager. CLAMP tends to be pretty safe on the sex and violence side, with a few exceptions like X/1999.

Definitely can't go wrong with Azumanga Daioh. Emma would be another extremely safe choice. I can't foresee anyone complaining about those, and both are generally well-liked.

'course, Emma might not be popular among teenagers, at least not among males. I wouldn't know, I never was a normal teenager.

If you look at the lists of what is popular right now, there aren't exactly many that would be suitable if you don't allow occasional nudity. Air Gear is quite popular, but that series has just started. Naruto? Some violence, some nudity, but I don't see how it isn't suitable for teenagers. I read worse at age of seven. School Rumble would probably be a safe choice, but it's another unfinished series. I don't remember seeing any nudity in Fruits Basket, but maybe I didn't read it far enough - there's some semi-nudity that I can remember, but it was quite tame.

#8: There WILL be (is?) female (top) nudity in FB later on, when a certain Secret is revealed (the one that made me stop reading the manga when I found out about it, and still causes me to wax enraged to this day).

I agree that Hikaru no Go, The Prince of Tennis, Yotsuba&! would work well in a library.

La Blue Girl??? Are you serious? That's hentai! Parody hentai, but still hentai. And 3X3 Eyes is extremely violent.

Oh my God! La Blue Girl? Seriously? That's one of the most extreme manga I can think of!

Yipes! Angel Sanctuary would NEVER fly-- it's blashemous and incestuous! Chobits is stuffed full of sexual innuendo (to say the least). As others said, "La Blue Girl" is not a good choice as it is infamous for its tentacle rape. >_May contain bloody violence, bad language, nudity...

I'm going to agree with the concerns already expressed about 3x3 Eyes, Angel Sanctuary, Chobits, La Blue Girl and YUA for a HS library - I'll also add concerns about Kashimashi, I"s and Wallflower. As much as I enjoy Wallflower myself, I don't think it would go over well.

Cardcaptor Sakura, Full Moon and Prince of Tennis would all be good buys, and I would also pick up From Far Away, Imadoki!, Ultra Maniac and other titles by Wataru Yoshizumi.

My favorite of my limited manga experience thus far has been Her Majesty's Dog which seems to be rather tame in terms of sexual innuendo and violence compared to others I've read and/or read reviews on. I wouldn't see anything wrong with it being read in high school. I also think the subject matter would be highly appealing to teens.

So, while I adore CLAMP I don't know if all of their stuff would be safe. I love Legal Drug but the homosexual innuendos are everywhere and I think that, pending on where your school system is, some parents might have something to say about that. My old school system would have had a fit.

I feel that I should recommend Godchild but it gets kind of sketchy toward the end of the series. Once you hit like volume five or six I just can't see anybody being ok with it being in a school library. Oh, and definitely not it's prequel series...at all...ever...because it is obscenely violent. I hope this helps.

How about Inuyasha, it has a bit of nudity and violence but I can't see parents being uptight about it, my parents used to read/watch the anime with me and they actually liked it. The general story line is really good but it is realllllllyy long, 500 odd chapters but I read it all in about four months everyday for about an hour. Maybe you could stretch it over the whole year? But Inuyasha is really popular among both girl and boy teens. And it's funny too, without being rude.

inu yasha has a lot of female tope nudity...like, everywhere.it's also a bit violent. but honestly i'm a highschooler and i read it... i don't think i'm scarred for life yet. I read Fruits Basket, too, which throughout the 21 vol. released in the U.S., there have never been fully naked scenes. it's not really violent either.
Black Cat is great. I'm also reading FMA, which is a tad violent but still high school appropriate...From far Away is a must have. :)

Oh My Goddess has some inuendo, but it's pretty tame.

I would do a quick survey at the school maybe? See what the students are already reading?
We're currently building up our anime collection (but since this is a college and not a high school we don't have the same issues) and consulting what we feel are staples that we need.
Ask the students what the "best mangas" are and see what seems to be common?

As for a manga reccomendation
I liked MARS a lot in high school but there is an issues with sex (rape, sex, and so on since it's a main part of the plot and background of a character)
I would also reccomend Fushigi Yugi: Mysterious Play

I'm also a high school librarian and this thread was very helpful for me. I want to order more manga but I'm not familiar with the genre. Thank you for giving me some direction.

Library Wars is a cute one, but isn't complete yet. I think they have published up through volume 3.

I'd also certainly suggest both Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and xxxHolic by Clamp. They are interconnected series which are both completed in Japan. Tsubasa has finished in the U.S. but I think xxxHolic has one or two volumes left for publication.

I couldn't speak to Naruto or Bleach but they certainly are popular.

Yurara and Ghost Hunt are pretty good as well. Yurara is a complete series, more geared towards girls. I can't figure out if the most recent volume of Ghost Hunt was supposed to be the last of the series or not.
