The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge - 1994

Coleridge’s famous poem describes the terrible effects that the killing of an albatross has on a mariner. He and his ship are transported to a supernatural world where they encounter death and his ship. It is one of the best-known poems in English literature and draws on a mixture of maritime legend and superstition.

This 50 page edition is introduced by Richard Holmes and is illustrated with ten wood engravings by Garrick Palmer. The whole book is printed on pale blue paper. It is bound in dark purple-red artificial moiré silk (which is notoriously likely to fade) and has a front cover-label with a wood engraving in dark purple-red by Palmer. The endleaves are pale blue and the dark red slipcase measures 26x21.5cm.

In 2010 The Folio Society published a magnificent limited edition of this work which was reviewed in Folio Archives here.

Another great one. I still don't have any of Palmer's work in my collection, a deficiency I hope to soon remedy. But I am not sure this is the most accessible title with which to do it. Perhaps the Three Stories of Melville from FS would be a better start.

Nice review, as usual.
