webp images on LT

When uploading images for my catalog I had been converting any webp images to jpeg because for some reason I thought LT wouldn't accept webp. This morning I accidentally uploaded an image that I thought was jpeg and then realized was webp . . . and it WORKED!!

Just wondering if there is a preference for jpeg images? I.e., should I still convert before uploading?

These images are mostly coming from Hoopla and are for audiobooks I listen to. When I see the image the filename says jpeg, but then when I download it becomes webp . . . annoying . . . but there are plenty of easy conversion sites out there so I don't mind doing the switch . . . I was just surprised this morning when the webp images worked on LT.

I'm thinking that I read somewhere on the wiki about what file types were allowed and that's why I thought it had to be jpeg . . . so maybe the wiki is out of date.

But I would like to know if I should be taking the time to convert or whether it's okay to be lazy and just grab and upload the webp versions.

Thanks!

You shouldn't need to download images first. Right click on the image and use the "Copy Image URL"
Then when you go to the Change Cover Page, you can paste the URL right in the "Or grab one from the web" box.

Whee! I'd been asking for this for years.

>4 al.vick: You can't download if you don't see it either. If you can download it, you can copy the image address and upload directly without the middle step

Thanks, but I'm going to download them anyway . . . because I never trust anything on the internet/cloud to retain information accurately and indefinitely (e.g. see the previous system of linking isbn to amazon images and then amazon changes something and the new image is no longer accurate). . . so I have local backups of everything, often both paper and digital. I want to know that the image I see and select is the image that will be connected to the book . . . even if the website I originally saw it on (or LT) changes something.

I still don't have the answer to my actual question re whether the LT system cares about the image format, webp vs jpeg. (Images are used in many places/ways on LT. Will webp work everywhere? )

>6 LucindaLibri: I don't have an answer to your question, but grabbing the image directly from web page has the same result as downloading it and then uploading it. In both cases, it is from then on hosted on LT and will be as long someone is using it as a cover. If LT doesn't accept webp, but you're fine with it for local backup, you can download the image for backup and grab it from web to upload on LT, thus avoiding the need to convert in the process
