Two people stuck in an elevator- not knowing the next time they would see the light of day again.

Jean rushed over to the elevator, pressing the button for the 4th floor profusely. "Come on, damn elevator..." He muttered. He was about to be late for a very important meeting. He tightened the grip on his briefcase as he waited.

Mary was already standing inside the elevator, anxious about the meeting that they were supposed to be in, although the elevator was being slow. "Ich werde zu diesem Treffen zu spät kommen! (I will be late for this meeting!)"

Jean quickly stepped in the elevator, practically jumping with impatience.

Mary jumped a little, standing in the corner of the elevator, a bunch of papers in her hands. "Oh ähm hallo (Oh um hello)"

Jean looked over, "What?" He said with an edge in his voice.

Mary cleared her throat, "Hello" they said, still holding the papers, her hands turning white from how hard she was grasping it.

"Good Morning, I'm Jean over with the marketing department. Unfortunately, I don't have time for conversation." He said forcefully.

"Guten Morgen, mein Name ist Mary (Good Morning, my name is Mary)" They said, smiling a little. "Ich arbeite in der Computer- und Informationsabteilung (I work in the computer and information department)"

"Yes, yes. Nice meeting you." He said, pretending to have understood what Mary said. He watched the number on the elevator.

Mary looked down at the ground, sighing. "Der Aufzug ist heute ziemlich langsam (The elevator is pretty slow today)"

"Yep", He still had no idea what she was saying.

They looked up at the numbers, sighing again. "Das dauert ewig (This takes forever)"

"Do you speak English, or perhaps French?", Jean asked. When he said 'perhaps' his accent made the word sound funny.

They nodded, "I can only speak it a little, i know more German"

"Ah, I see."

They smiled a little more, "Your accent....is it French?"

“Ah yes! I hail from Paris, France!” He exclaimed. He appeared to be opening up more.

"Im from Lübeck, Germany" they muttered, trying to use English.

“Never heard of it! Say… we’ve been on floor two for a while…”

"Yeah, would you say it was um...how do you say it- auf dieser Etage feststecken?"

Jean looked at you, confused. “I’m terribly sorry, but… what?”

"I am still learning....but i said stuck on this floor"

“Damn it,” He cursed. “What a nuisance…”

"We will both be late for meetings, which i don't mind its just...a very small space"

“Mhm. This particular meeting is important though. Missing it could mean losing the company…”

"That would be terrible!" They exclaimed.

“Precisely. Thats why I need to get out.”, He attempted to use his cellphone. “Crap… its dead.”

"I leave mine on my desk, usually the elevator works"

Jean loosened his tie and slumped to the floor, “Better get comfortable…” He said, with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

They stayed standing, although they put down her stuff.

Jean sat there silently, shifting closer to the wall, “Pretty small elevator…” He commented dryly.

"It uh, really is- you would be lucky to fit three people in here"

“Yeah…”, Jean said. Despite the lack of room, he continuously shifted closer and closer to the wall. He wanted to give you space as much as we wanted his own space.

They stepped towards the corner, "Why do they make elevators this small!"

“Its not meant to break like this. Its also cheaper, and you know this company…” He chuckled.

"Yeah, but at least it can hold a bunch of weight"

“I hope…” Jean said, a new fear instilled in him.

"Its held a bunch of people- if anything- well I'm not sure what it will do"

“Lets just hope… Being trapped already sucks enough…”, He said blearily. He was extremely bored already.

"It does, and if anyone is claustraphobic....here is their worst nightmare"

“Good thing i’m not… are you?” He asked, now worried.

"A little, but not really as much as some other people"

“Its not bad at least… I’m sorry to drag you in this mess”

"Its fine, i was already in the elevator"

“I guess. I just feel bad…” He chuckled again.

"Everyone feels bad every once and a while"

“I guess that makes sense.”, He said.

"Yeah, also America is weird compared to Germany- so many things are different"

“Mm. Same with France to America. Many different food, cultures, and people.”

"I exprerience a lot more hate, than with my hometown"

“Well… Americans kinda suck… to be honest…”

"Seems like it..."

Jean listened to the silence for awhile… He could feel himself dozing off.

They finally sat down, sighing.

Jean closed his eyes.

They stayed awake for a little while, looking around the small space.

Jean could feel himself falling asleep, the hum of the fluorescent lights a lulluby.

"maybe i can take a small nap..." they muttered, closing her eyes.

Jean dreamed of nothing but a black plane… the backs of his eyelids 😃😃

They soon fell asleep, exhausted from just sitting.

Its been about 1 hour, and Jean arose with a headache and a growling stomach.

Mary awoke, yawning. "ugh- this elevator is very uncomfortable to sleep in"

“Yep…” He said groggily

"Agh- my back"

“Would you like a massgage or something?”, Jean asked kindly.

"I think i'll be alright- this has happened before"

“As it does with all of us,” He said,”do you happen to have any food to spare?”

"I may have some snacks- but thats it"

“Ah… Eat it yourself.. unless you have some extra..”

They grabbed a small bag of chips out of a shoulder bag they had and have it to him.

“Are you sure?”

"Im sure"

“Thank you…”, he took the food graciously
