There's something quite beautiful about the austerity of type design in these Regency/Victorian era books. Clearly, some typesetter at Smith, Elder & Co said to themselves "if we are going to eternally record the story of life for the benefit of posterity then it had better look good!"

I shy away from things that come in wooden slipcases or boxes (I collect books; if I started collecting furniture too then there would be a bit of a domestic incident). But this wooden box looks quite handsome in situ and also provides a practical-looking reading support.

WCarter,
I may have missed it; Is there a paper specification? A colophon?
Thanks.

>3 Mechan1c:
The only page in the whole four volumes that is not a facsimile of the 1840 original is the page on which the number and signature appear (picture 14 above) and a brief colophon opposite this that is also shown in the picture. In the promotional booklet, the paper is described as "special antique paper", whatever that means.
