I love this author! If you love richly woven plots, three-dimensional characters, elegant writing, and most especially, gorgeous imagery combined with originality of execution, I can tell you now, "Do I ever have an author for you!"

Tan Twan Eng the writer of The Gift of Rain, the haunting and beautiful novel of a English-Chinese Malaysian youth's emergence from innocence to the harsh reality of war and the ambiguous and dangerous world of adults who are fighting in WWII under Japanese occupation.

His second novel, The Garden of Evening Mists, an elegiac novel of a woman who had been in a Japanese POW camp whose life exhibits the dichotomy between her profession as a judge of war crimes cases and her mission in creating a memorial garden to her sister who did not survive their imprisonment.

If you have discovered this Asian Pacific writer already, you will want to pre-order his third novel due to be issued in October this year. The book is The House of Doors, set in 1921 Panang (the setting of Eng's first novel) and features the three time period chronology that Eng is a master of. I've read a certain that "real Life" literary character figures in a co-starring role as he is hosted by the protagonists in the home, Cassowary House, struggling to find inspiration for his next novel. I think he'll find it!

Eng is no prolific writer of historical fiction based in the Malay Straits but he is the best Asian Pacific writer working now that I know of. Not to insult lawyers, but he's come a long way from being an intellectual property lawyer. I guess you could say he made a career change to become his own client! Wikipedia has this to say about his success and international recognition as an author. . ."The Garden of Evening Mists which won the Man Asian Literary Prize and Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, making Tan the first Malaysian to be recognised by all three awards."

All I can add is he is one of the very few writers of our time who is writing the stories I can't forget and would take with me to a desert island to spend eternity reading them over and over again.
