All Print-on-Demand for University of Nebraska Press?

The University of Nebraska Press is a leader in military history, among other fields. One of its more notable past releases was Christopher Browning's The Origins of the Final Solution.

Recently, I paid $55 for a hardcover copy of their 200-page monograph Friendly Enemies (on North-South fraternization during the Civil War). Even though it was a fairly new release, having come out in August 2020, what I ended up receiving was a low-quality print-on-demand version. I've included snapshots of its "perfect" binding and of its tell-tale colophon. The binding does not feel like it would survive an attempt to open it to lie flat.

Print-on-demand originally seemed to be used by university presses for reprints from their back catalogues to avoid doing a whole new press run for potentially limited delayed demand. More and more, however, it seems that scholarly publishers are using print-on-demand right from the get-go. It seems like this might now be the policy of the University of Nebraska Press.

I know there tends to be a price premium for academic books, but there used to be a bit of a tradeoff in that you could often count on getting a sturdy copy. I gotta say: 55 dollars for this . . . thing is ridiculous.
