Not sure if these should be combined

Hello good people,

I recently downloaded a kindle book on "Code Talkers" about and by Chester Nez.
https://www.librarything.com/work/25564108/book/191013948

I was surprised that no one else had it. I looked around and found this:
https://www.librarything.com/work/11531037

I tried combining them, then wasn't sure, so I separated them. I looked up the second book on Amazon and it said I already had it. I suspect they are the same, but…?

Also, when I look up the second author, who is probably the actual writer, I found this: https://www.librarything.com/author/avilajudithschiess
So my book is not listed but for members it says 0 (279). Does that make sense? I appreciate any help you can supply.

Yours in confusion, k4k

They appear to be different books.

Looking at the listing for The Life and Times of the Code Talker on Amazon, it says, "After the publication of his book, Code Talker, Chester Nez reflects on the path that took him to where he is today—from growing up on the New Mexico reservation steeped in the traditions of his Native American ancestors, to his days fighting alongside other Code Talkers, to his hardships and triumphs after the war. Here are stories of his family, then and now, tales of his close relationship to nature and her creatures, accounts of how his life and legacy have changed since publishing his memoir, and a tribute to his fallen friends . . . The Life and Times of the Code Talker is the perfect purchase for those who never want Chester Nez’s stories to end"

Hello, >1 krazy4katz:

Thanks for asking. Those are two separate books. I've added a few bits of info to the Common Knowledge that might clarify why. But in summary, Avila and Nez put together The Life and Times of the Code Talker* after releasing Code Talker*, which is more tightly focused on WWII than on his life overall.

By the way, if you enter the ISBN (below), you should see the Amazon link appear on the second book's page.

The "0 (270)" might correct eventually. I'm guessing the mismatch was because Avila had been confirmed as a secondary author. She is the author of her friend Chester Nez's memoir, so I didn't think it was accurate to say she was a secondary author simply for not being the book's subject. I've edited her entry in the Author section.

* I can't get both the touchstones to generate. Whatever that means.

The Life and Times of the Code Talker

Code Talker

Your problem was probably either a search blip or too soon after the works had been combined/separated.

>4 MarthaJeanne: oh, good. I think it might've been a search blip. The touchstones showed in the preview, initially.

Thank you very much, everyone! Now I will have to get the other book too. This one is fascinating. It goes into Chester Rez's life growing up in the 1920s, as well as WWII. I am very ignorant of the experiences of Native Americans during that time period. He was forced to go away to school in order to learn English. It was very cruel. On the other hand, it did allow him to integrate into society to the extent that he wanted to.

PS. I put a disambiguation note in Common Knowledge for each work.

Would a work to work relationship be feasible? That is more effective in preventing bad combinations.

>9 aspirit: already added one. I hope it helps.

>6 krazy4katz: sounds like good reading.

>9 aspirit: Yes, although so far it is only his childhood, which is very stressful and sad. The schools he was sent to used a lot of capital punishment and wouldn't allow anyone to speak their Navajo language, but they knew no English. The older boys would steal their food etc. However the parts about Navajo culture are very interesting.

krazy4katz (#10):

The schools he was sent to used a lot of capital punishment

I sincerely hope you mean "corporal punishment"!

>1 krazy4katz: 0(270) Means that no members have works with her as primary author; 270 with her as an 'other author'.

>11 lorax: Hah! Yes! I am going to argue that it was an automatic spelling correction. Not my fault. ;-)

Thank you!
