Were you surprised how quickly in the story Ruth Willis was caught and arrested?

Yes. When they found the knife and it was near Ruth's house, Kim thought it was likely that Ruth did it and went to see her. I thought that was a bit of a leap to think Ruth did it that quickly when the rapist's mother said that many neighbors said or did mean things because they didn't like him in their neighborhood. It really could've been someone else.

Since Ruth was raped by Allan, she was the best suspect and the knife was found near her house. I think the author wanted to get her arrest out of the way because the main focus is really Alex.

I agree with >3 EadieB:. Since it didn't say that he had ever raped anyone before and Ruth was on the police file as the victim it stood to reason that she would be the first suspect. She made it fairly easy for them by nearly confessing when she opened the door.

I agree with you all.

Not surprised; this story is about Kim and Alex going head to head.

I wasn't surprised that they got on to Ruth so quickly - she would have been the natural primary suspect since she still lived in the area and the victim appeared to have been killed by someone smaller (5'4" or so). I also wasn't surprised that she'd confessed so quickly - although she was easy to manipulate, when it was all said and done, she realized quickly what she'd done and that it had not given her back "her light"
