In the Skidmore study, among people who write with two spaces after periods—“two-spacers”—there was an increase in reading speed of 3 percent when reading text with two spaces following periods, as compared to one. This is, Johnson points out, an average of nine additional words per minute above their performance “under the one-space conditions.”
This is a small difference, though if a change like this saved even a tiny amount of time, or prevented a tiny amount of miscommunication, the net benefit across billions of people could be enormous. Entire economies could be made or broken, wars won or lost.

Don't think the Atlantic article is a good summary of the paper.

Only if you use a fixed width font, and the reader has their head clamped in place. Neither of which describes my usual reading.

Yes, that's why it made sense with typing because the fonts were fixed width. With proportional fonts there is not such a reason.

when people read so very little, it's not easy to raise and keep any awareness or understanding of the this matter or its importance.
Reading texts in which sentences are separated with double spaces is easier because the sentences are more quickly and easily recognized as units.
Grammar, style and punctuation have all declined so far that clarity has suffered. Adopting a single space between sentences just adds to these obstacles to fluid writing and reading.
Stupid and careless grammar, style and punctuation goes with a stupid and careless culture which neither cares much for reading nor understands why it ought to care.
