It doesn't happen often. I typically donate or abandon books where they might find a good home. The only time something gets thrown in the trash is if it's in such shabby shape it's beyond redemption.
Recently abandoned books include The Towering World of Jimmy Choo which made sure I would never buy anything of the brand or affiliated companies; Three Cups of Tea which made me understand why third world countries frequently despise NGOs; and Rabid Nun Infects Entire Convent which was an amusing trifle I left for a plane's cleaning crew to chuckle over.
