An interesting book by an Arab writer giving a great account of social structure of nineteenth centiry Egypt .The oasis is subservient to Cairo who in turn are subservient to the British. The inhabitants of the oasis have two camps, those of the east who usurped the westerners, the original inhabitants who had to flee west many centuries ago.
The former are of the Moslem faith, the latter have clung on to their ancient religion.War periodically erupts between the two, and sometimes Cairo when taxes are not paid.
What is really interesting is the way the ghost of Alexander becomes involved via the Irish wife of the Egyptian governor.
Although I have been to the middle east I never really understood the social system. This book bought bought things into focus on an instant.
