Hi all, I just joined the group today, and I had a question for my graduate studies actually. I asked it over in the military history section, and didn't have much luck, so I thought I might try it here:

I just finished a reread of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and was wondering about its accuracy. I've read this a couple of times, for different purposes, but I'm not really familiar with the other literature surrounding Lawrence's exploits, especially for how reliable his own account actually is. I know Liddell Hart wrote a book, Lawrence of Arabia, which I haven't read, but I gather it's hero-worship mainly. Does anyone know any other good secondary sources that take a relatively objective view on Lawrence? I'm especially interested in his military exploits, not really about Lawrence himself so much.

I'm more interested in actual books or articles than websites. Thanks!

If you have the time, you should read Jeremy Wilson's Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography (1989). You can download the first eight chapters here: http://telawrence.info/telawrenceinfo/life/authorised_biog_int.shtml .

Wow - this group's been sleeping for a while! I found a couple of good used Penguin Modern Classics editions of The Mint recently, which has led me here...

Anyone else still interested in the topic originally posted here might try to find a copy of Suleiman Mousa's T.E.Lawrence: An Arab View.

It's been a while since you posted this, but you might want to look at Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell: Adventurer, Adviser to Kings, Ally of Lawrence of Arabia. She had a good bit of interaction with him and made a number of observations about his exploits, character and abilities.
