pages 1-111
the main character stanley yelnats is wrongly convicted for stealing an expensive pair of shoes. he is sentenced to go to a camp green lake for the summer. he tries to think in a positively. he gets there and he unpacks in his tent that he has to share with someone they call "barf-bag". he is starting to learn the strict rules there. for example he has only three minutes to shower every morning. every day they have to dig a hole out in a big area that used to be a lake. it is so dry there that it is no longer a lake, but a big open area of dry dirt filled with empty holes. the holes they have to dig have to be as wide as the shovel and as deep as the shovel. the story so far is really interesting and i will keep you posted

chapters 7-10
stanley has to dig his first hole. he keeps complaining how the ground is so hard and that he has blisters on his hands. his friend magnet tells him that the first hole is the hardest, but then his other friend zero says that the second one is the hardest. his blisters are ripping open but he continues to dig. he said that he felt like he was digging his own grave. zero finishes first, spits in the hole and starts walking back then armpit, another friend, spits in his hole and walks back. after a few more minutes stanley finally finishes and starts to head back. when they ge back, mr. sir, a man in charge there, says to them that if they find anything interesting while digging they should report it to the warden. the next day while stanley is digging his second hole, he finds a fossilized fish and he thinks that it will qualify as something interesting. so he waits until mr.sir shows up with the water truck and he shows him. he laughs at him and says the warden isnt interested in fossils. they also talk about these deadly yellow-spotted lizards that live there. he was told that they are fatal and that they should stay away from them
i thought that the part of when he said that he felt like he was digging his own grave showed a lot of how hard it was there. he had blisters all over his hands and they were ripping open. to me that line showed a lot of how hard it was to dig a hole in that hard ground.

chapters 11-13
stanley digs his next hole and zero comes up to him to tell him that if he finds anything interesting he should give it to him because he has been there the longest. stanley agrees. he wonders why zero, who is the smallest of the group, became the leader, but his mind wonders and he continues to dig. x-ray tells him that the third hole is the hardest to dig. the next day he is digging his third hole and he thinks to himself that x-ray was right about the third hole being the hardest. then he digs the fourth hole the next day and concludes that every hole becomes harder to dig. stanley is becoming thinner and his hands are getting tougher. one day when he is digging he finds a small gold tube with the initials KB engraved inside of a heart. he gives it to zero just like he said he would and told him that he should wait until tomorrow to give it to the warden so that he can have the whole day off. i dont know what the gold tube is yet and how it will play into the story, but i will kepp you posted.

chapters 14-16
The next day X-ray starts digging his hole again, but he didn't say anything until the water truck came. He told Mr. Pandaski about the gold tube he found and he said," Good job. You can have the rest of the day off." He fills up the other boys' canteens and Mr. Pandaski gives him a ride back. The warden heard about the find and tell him to bring three wheelbarrows to the site. She instructed one of the boys to keep digging and the other to sift through the dirt and tell her if he finds anything. She offers anyone who finds something the day off and double shower time. No one finds anything( due to the fact that stanley gave him the tube and it was actually found where his hole was the day before.) After a long while, the warden calls it a day and tells everyone to head back. Stanley realizes that they aren't just digging to "build character", but to find something. He went to bed, and that is where I left off.

chapters 17-
the boys are digging in the area where they think x-ray found the gold tube for the next week and a half. The warden is getting upset because they arent finding anyhing else to the point where he pokes zig-zag with a pitchfork, drawing blood. He just took an empty bag of sunflower seeds to it and he told him to keep digging. The next day they boys are digging and Magnet steals Mr. Sir's bag of sunflower seeds and they are passing the bag around taking seeds from the bag. Stanley gets the bag and he dropped it and seeds felll into his hole. He tried to put dirt over the seeds to hide them before he came back. Mr. Sir went around looking in the boys holes to see who stole them and he sees some seeds in the bottom of his hole. Stanley says that he stole the seeds and ate all of them( even though the other boys did it too). he tells him to get in the truck so they can go back and talk to the warden.

Looks like Stanleys in trouble. I think he took the blame so he could make friends.

Do you think that it was morally right for Stanley to lie and take the consequences for his friends?

chapters 19-27
Stanley is taken to the warden's house by mr. sir and he tells her that he thinks he is taking the blame for another kid. She tells him to go get her makeup case. She takes out a red nail polish made with snake venom. She explains that it is harmless when it is dry but it is deadly when it is wet. She paints her nails with it and slaps mr. sir in the face, leaving red marks from where her nails scratched his face. the next day he goes out to dig his hole to find that zero had almost finished digging it for him. he asked him why he did it and he said that he didnt steal the seeds or the sneakers. they make a deal that stanley will teach him how to read and zero will dig his hole for an hour every day. when he is going to sleep he remebers the wardens house and the makeup case. A lipstick was on the top that matched the one they found earlier. it was gold with the letters, KB, inscribed on it. for the next few days, when mr.sir came to fill up the boys canteens, he didnt fill stanleys. he just let the water pour on the ground. one day he filled his canteen up, but went around to the front of the truck and did something to his canteen. Later, he takes out his canteen and dumps out what he had in there, afraid of what he might have put in it.

I think it was because he was helping out a friend who was in a worse situation. Stanley was the new guy and magnet had been there for a while so he would have had a severe punishment and maybe stanleys not so bad.
