Just a reminder to keep an eye out for deleted Borders entries. Unless the policy has changed and no one told me, we're supposed to mark closed locations as "defunct," not delete them.

On a more personal note, I'd feel worse about all these store closings, but given that I haven't bought anything from a brick and mortar store in a while, I only have myself to blame. But I will miss them, especially the Kips Bay location in Manhattan.

Asking again: has the policy regarding closed venues changed?

If it hasn't, then we need to be on the lookout for people deleting Borders stores instead of marking them as "defunct." I undeleted a few and left a comment on each that reads, "for closed venues, please mark as 'defunct' and do not delete" but that's only going to be partially effective.

Thanks for the note. I agree. I'll put a note in bold "Closed venues should be marked defunct, not deleted." next to the delete option.

>3 timspalding: Hey Tim - I just rescued 3 closed venues from the deleted list. I'm not sure that the "Closed venues should be marked defunct, not deleted" statement is helping. Is there any way to make it stand out more, or to have a warning / second chance message pop up before the final act is committed?

I don't know. People ignore messages, I think it's best if we just watch "25 most recently deleted venues" from time to time.

I'm back on this topic because I restored 3 deleted venues in 2 days. They were deleted by various members because the venues had closed. People aren't reading the disclaimer about marking closed venues "defunct" instead of deleting them.

Current statement:

Delete this venue

Click to delete this venue. If in doubt, do not delete. Closed venues should be marked as defunct, not deleted. If you delete a venue by accident you can restore it by visiting the page and choosing to restore it.

What if it read like this (or similar) instead?

Delete this venue

Closed venues should NOT be deleted. Instead, please mark them as 'defunct'.

If in doubt, do not delete. If you delete a venue by accident you can restore it by visiting the page and choosing to restore it. Click to delete this venue.

Or even better: two separate sections!

Closed Venues

Closed venues should NOT be deleted. Instead, please mark them as 'defunct'.

Delete this venue

Use this feature only for spam and other non book-related venues. Do not delete venues that have closed. If in doubt, do not delete. If you delete a venue by accident you can restore it by visiting the page and choosing to restore it. Click to delete this venue.

Just rescued 4 more closed venues from the delete list. And there's another one sitting there with no justification for deleting that I suspect is also a closed venue.

I don't think changing the text is going to stop people from making a muck of things.
