Hi

Does anyone know of any books written in Spanish that are not too advanced? I mean books that are only a few notches above children's books, like middle school level books. I just want to practice my Spanish reading comprehension because I don't really get to too often.

Thanks.

I would reccommend picking up a copy of The Alchemist (El Alquimista) by Paulo Coelho at your library if it carries Spanish books. Although the book is not specifically aimed at a younger audience or at language learners, it is written in a rather simple style that makes it a fun read.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if my library has it.

Anything by Blaine Ray is written very simply. These books were created for high school Spanish classes so their subject matter appeals to teens but I've found them good for adults also.

I like to reread my favorite children's books in languages I'm newly learning. I read The Phantom Tollbooth in Spanish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Serbian. They're not original native-culture texts, but they do have the advantage of familiar content to help you puzzle your way through unfamiliar vocabulary.

There is a collection of short stories by B. Traven. I read it when I was in Mexico, don't know if it has ever been translated into English, but they were good stories & I didn't have to spend too much time with el diccionario.

I'm pretty sure B. Traven wrote in German and that at least one collection of short stories is Spanish translations from the English translations from the German. That doesn't necessarily disqualify them for the purpose, of course.

The company "bookcloseouts" has some Beverly Cleary chapter books in Spanish. You can find them at http://www.bookcloseouts.com. They sell remaindered books at very reasonable prices.
