Searching for a lost book

I'm looking for information about a book I once read - a fictionalized account of Frederick Barbarossa during the time of the Crusades. I read the book back when I was in high school ( possibly earlier) and I don't think it was a new release then. It included tales of his affairs with boys ( as well as women) which was pretty steamy stuff for a high school kid in the early 60's. Any info about the title or author would be much appreciated
