2nd in the Queen Betsy series. This has her moving out of her house and into the mansion. She also get her dream job in the shoe department at Macy's. This one someone is trying to kill off the vampires of the city and has succeeded a few times. When they target Betsy things don't go quite as they'd planned. Not only do they not succeed they have a sit down with her and the others and they learn that not all vampires are bad. While they call a truce another murder happens so there's still others out there. All in all just light fluff, but super fun to read. ( )

I'm liking Sinclair more. I'm able to follow Betsy better. Still didn't feel the details of the sex scene at the end was needed, heck it was describe as an after thought not even during which seemed unnecessary. Yes, Ill read #3... now I have to know what happens. ( )

I've read Undead and Unemployed, the second book in Ms. Davidson's Queen Betsy series, before. I have listened to Nancy Wu's narration in audio editions of most of the rest of the series. This is the first time I've listened to this one, and it was as funny while being listened to as it was to read.

This book introduces the mansion that Dr. Marc Spangler dubbed 'Vamp Central' as well as Jon Delk of the Blade Warriors. Detective Nick Berry has a role here: a conversation with Betsy, and taking the statement of a taxi driver saved by Betsy.

Betsy obtains her dream job: selling fine footwear at the Macy's in the Mall of America. Too bad her vampire queen duties are interfering with that. Someone is killing vampires. As Tina points out to Betsy, it's her duty to protect the vampires.

Tina falls victim to the Blade Warriors, while Monica, another vampire, escapes. Tall, dark, handsome, and arrogant Eric Sinclair, King of the vampires, gets Betsy to heal Tina. Then Betsy herself is attacked.

Betsy's interactions with the teens who are the Blade Warriors, and their mentor, Father Markus, are funny. Her interactions with Sarah, a vampire who refers to Betsy as 'False Queen,' are not. There's also a darling little pre-schooler named Marie who appears to be living in Vamp Central. She clues Betsy into another power the vampire queen has that she didn't know about and doesn't appreciate.

The relationship between Betsy and Eric is still antagonistic and hot.

Betsy walks right into mortal peril. Will her friends rescue her in time? Will they even be needed?

I recommend this book to readers who enjoyed the first book, Undead and Unwed, urban fantasy fans in general and vampire fans in particular. ( )

I liked that the sex scenes were cut back from book one, but it just wasn't as funny as the opener "Undead and Unwed" which had me laughing out loud, something pretty rare for me even though I read a lot of tongue and cheek stuff. It's still a great read but I recommend starting at the beginning so you get the full storyline about how "Elizabeth Taylor", no not that E.T., becomes a vampire and how it changes her life or death depending how you look at it. Read this spending 3 weeks in St. Louis for my brand new job. Ironic, isn't it? ( )

This series must be the funniest books I've read in a while. Even though it's filled with serious happenings, Betsy just makes everything funny and you cannot do anything else but laugh. It always brightens my day, whenever I read these books. Also I was kept in the dark about the real vampire killer until the very end even though I had my own suspicions. It truly is entertainment at its best. Eric keeps getting better and better and I truly cannot wait to read the next book in the series. ( )

This series of books are essentially silly vampire chic-lit, but they're written so well, and with such a sense of fun that they are a joy to read. Perhaps the whole shoe thing was a little overdone in this book, but it's all part of the development of the main character. A book I enjoyed far more than I thought I would. ( )

Though the main character can be super annoying sometimes, they're light-hearted and fun to read. Plus, I love me the one steamy sex scene per book that I wait for the whole way through, then sigh over when it's finally here. Nice not to just have the whole book be nothing but gratuitous sex scenes like many paranormal romances are. ( )

The perfect book to read after finishing a tearjerker. I enjoy Betsy's sarcasm and sass! It isn't easy being Queen of the Vampires, but she's easing into the roll, whether she likes it or not.

Sinclair is growing on me, but I would like to see a bit more character building and "wooing" of Betsy. I'm not devastated by this. It's impossible to take these books too seriously. They are fun, light reads with enough humor to keep the blues away. ( )

I enjoyed this one more than the first, and I really appreciated that the author toned down the soft porn scenes. I enjoy the story for the humor and otherworldly element, not because I need help imagining graphic sexual encounters between heterosexuals! ( )

It's been a couple months since Undead and Unwed. Betsy has still not adjusted to the fact that she is queen of the vampires and that with that title comes responsibilities. Betsy is determined that she will regain some semblance of a life and for her, this means getting a job and paying her own way through life. It should be simple right? Well, it might have been were it not for the fact that someone is killing vampires in St. Paul and as Queen of the Vampires, it's Betsy's responsibility to keep her people safe.

In case you are wondering, Betsy doesn't get anymore likeable in Undead and Unemployed. Betsy remains extremely vapid, whiny and just plain sarcastic. I don't think I have disliked a character this much since Charlene Harris's Aurora Teagarden and believe me, that's saying something. At this point, I am just going to go ahead and give up on any kind of character development in this series. Yes, I know it's early but Betsy is simply beyond hope at this point, even if she claims to be a feminist.

Betsy's relationship with king and consort Eric, continues to be stormy at best. On the one hand, I can understand Eric's frustration with Betsy's intentionally obtuse attitude towards everything vampire. Betsy has access to the Book of the Dead which will inform her about her role in the life of vampires and what she can expect as their queen. It would make sense for Betsy to read it from cover to cover but of course, Betsy cannot be bothered but whines when she gains new information from Eric and Tina, which she could have learned on her own, had she bothered to read the damn book.

Eric is controlling and possessive in many ways. Normally that kind of behaviour in a male love interest is beyond irritating to me but I cannot see any other way for Eric to make Betsy see the real danger she is in. I do however think that Eric took it a bit too far when he showed up at Betsy's job, demanded that she quit and when that didn't work, attempted to use his powers to force Betsy's boss to fire her. This scene is the only shining moment in the book for Betsy.

"My queen," he said, glaring down at me, "does not work."

"This one does," I said shortly. "And do you hear yourself? Jeez, I knew you were an ancient motherfucker, but even you must know women can have jobs now. And dammit! You made me say 'motherfucker' at work."

It's the only time where Betsy stands her ground and it actually makes sense. Yes, vampires are dying but Betsy should have the right to earn her own income as she sees fit and not be dependent upon Eric or Jessica for money.

Speaking of Jessica, it's clear that her main job is to support Betsy's lifestyle. When it turns out that Betsy's home is infested with termites, it's Jessica to the rescue with the purchase of a mansion. When Jessica is not pulling out her wallet, she is acting on Eric's behalf to bring Eric and Betsy together because she has determined despite Betsy's denials that Betsy has it bad for Eric. Jessica is so lucky that she even gets an invitation to Ant's party because of her wealth, which apparently overrules the colour of her skin. Jessica snarks about being offered chicken and watermelon to eat. Yes, it's racist but I still believe that Davidson adds these knock you over the head racist events because she really doesn't know how to write characters of colour. Racism is something that Davidson portrays casually. A good example of that is the exchange between Mr. Harris the cab driver and Detective Berry

More like 2.5 stars, but again the reading by Wu was excellent. The story was fun, but not even as filling as a Sookie Stackhouse story. Queen Betsy & all the rest of the characters are more caricatures than 'real' people. The world isn't very complex nor all that imaginative. So it was OK & I'm really only giving it 3 stars because Wu does such a great job. Still, I'm on to listen to the next one. ( )

Undead and Unemployed is the second book in MaryJanice Davidsonƒ??s QUEEN BETSY series. In the previous book, shallow and too fashionably-conscious Betsy died, came back as a vampire, and managed to kill the vampire queen, which makes Betsy the new queen. Her roommates and friends are determined to make sure Betsy gets the kind of royal treatment she deserves, but Betsy has no interest in fulfilling her exalted role. She just wants to work at her new dream job as a salesperson in the shoe department at Macyƒ??s. But when someone starts killing vampires in her city, her consort Sinclair insists that Betsy do something about it.

Another great story in the Queen Betsy series. Elizabeth Taylor continues to be undead and a queen. She prefers Betsy.

Undead and Unemployed has the vampires being killed by someone. Eric, Tina and a few other vampires go to the Queen for help. Betsy isn't to interested in helping. She didn't want to be a vampire nor did she want to be queen. When Tina is attacked Betsy get's concerned.

The vampires set a trap and set up Betsy as the bait. Nothing happens until they decide to call it a night. That is when the vampire hunters decide to attack. Betsy is her typical self and just talks to them trying to get them to understand that not all vampires are evil.

Jessica, Mark, Eric, Tina, Monique and Sarah meet the Blade Warriors when they decide to go to Betsy's house to make sure she is a vampire. This is when we meet Jon, Ani, and Father Marcus. Betsy talks with them and they start to see that not all vampires are evil.

Betsy realizes she can see ghosts and at first is terrified by this. It was touching to see how she finally adjusts to this. She helps the ghost re-unit with her mother who just happens to be the vampire Sarah. The Queen also learns that when she kills a vampire she gets all their possessions.

I wasn't surprise by who was the one getting the vampire hunters to do his/her bidding. It was funny with how the ending went. I will be continuing this series just for the laughs. ( )

Betsy is the queen of the vampires, forced into this position she doesn't really want. She is also "married" to a hot vampire, Eric Sinclair, this she also didn't intend. She has two best friends who would do anything for her and a whole host of other interesting characters in her life. But most of all Betsy is addicted to shoes! She even gets a job as Macy's to be around them and of course to make her own money.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying this series so far! It is fun and quirky, but, yep there is a but... Betsy just Bitches at everyone CONSTANTLY about EVERYTHING. She is not happy when anyone tries to help or if they don't help. If anyone opens their mouths she is instantly annoyed and has to put them down. I do not know how the people around her can handle it! She just really needs to tone it down. Anyone else feel like this?

At least she sort of makes up for this, by not being a perfect character.

So if you are looking for mindless fun, quirky characters and crazy story lines then this is the perfect beach/lazy afternoon read! ( )

I liked it the second time around also. It is not as good or as LOL fun as the first book but very fun. You kind of get use to the spaziness and idiocy of Betsy. It is a fun read but still light and no real serious story line. I'll probably continue on until I get bored. ( )

As entertaining as the first. Betsy is still ditzy and shoe-crazed and not yet ready (able?) to accept her place as queen of the vampires. ( )

Betsy, Queen of the Vampires, is back and needs a job. Thankfully, the re-employment center is open late one night a week. In addition to looking for a job she is having problems with her house and some vampires are being killed. This book is just as good as the first and full of more adventures. ( )

Betsy gets a job in the shoe department at Macy’s, which she calls “Heaven,” but unfortunately she misses work a lot because someone’s trying to kill the vampires. I was really hoping it wasn’t Buffy (spoiler alert: it’s not!). Betsy also wears yummy sushi jammies, which has to be a nod to Buffy, because if it isn’t that’s an incredibly improbable coincidence. I still don’t really like Betsy that much because she is kind of vacuous, but I love Tina, Jessica, Marc and the yummy Eric Sinclair, so I’m going to keep reading these. They’re light, fast-paced, and fun. ( )
