I wouldn't say I'm wild about books, but I do love reading. I'll read nearly anything: magazines, books, pamphlets on heart disease, the back of a bottle of shampoo...

I attribute my love of reading to my mother and her former addiction to romance novels. A romance novel was the first book I ever read and because I'm such a softy, it kept my attention and had me wanting to read more and more. People may laugh, but I am picky about what kind of romance novels I'll pick up. I won't read any that I could've written with my non-writing self.

I don't have an all-time favorite book, but James Baldwin's Blues for Mister Charlie changed my life, and I truly believe that Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinnelli--the best book ever written--is one book people of all ages should read.
