The GOOS Book Club was founded in 1995 and is comprised of an eclectic band of professional men in the Baton Rouge area, who share a love of literature and reading. The original idea of the Club---spurred on to actual fruition by Dr. John R. Clifford---was to provide a comfortable place for people to discuss a specific written work. The name of the Club was "adopted" (which sounds so much better than stolen) from the first novel selected for the group's consumption by Dr. Clifford, "The Snow Goose," by Paul Gallico. After the book was read, the first of the GOOS' traditions was effected, that of meeting at a nice restaurant to discuss the author and the work. Then, at the end of the first meeting, the second tradition was effected...the tradition of "dragooning." Dr. Clifford "dragooned" another GOOS member to pick the next book, who---at the end of the next meeting---dragooned another member and so it has gone on through the years. Each attending member is asked to have a work in mind in case they should be picked. The dragooned member must be prepared to provide some insight about the author at each dinner meeting. Other than these traditions, THERE ARE NO RULES AMONG THE GOOS.

We remember here the GOOS who were with us at the beginning and who arrived at the end a little before the rest of us. If you knew these guys, then you can understand why we miss them. If you did not know them...well...you should have. They could each be fairly termed "the genuine article" and, without doubt, each of them contributed immensely to the friendship, conversation and enriched life we all share in this group.
