David Buehler, PhD has been teaching Ethics and Philosophy at Providence College in Rhode Island since 1993. His courses have included: Bioethics, Philosophy of Death & Dying, Introduction to Ethics, Philosophy of the Human Person, General Ethics, Ethical Issues in Leadership, and--since 1996--The Philosophy of Violence. The last cited one is a full survey course on social, historical, and moral dimensions of Global Violence in the 21st Century. Special attention is given to War, Killing, Atrocity, Torture, Genocide, and Multi-Media Violence. In 2008/9, David will be teaching PHL 314 (Violence) and PHL 304 (Ethics of Food), among other courses.

David lives with his wife Janet in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

... Vocation

David was a clinical chaplain in hospitals and hospices from 1971 to 2007, and an Ethics Consultant for the USVA (1974-79), the National Cancer Institute (1974-79), and SouthCoast Hospitals Group in New Bedford, MA (1983-2007). In 2005 he defended his doctoral dissertation on three medieval philosophers: al-Ghazali, Maimonides, and Roman Llull, and was awarded the Doctorate in Philosophy by the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana. His Dissertation was designed at Notre Dame in 2003 and his Ordinarius was Dr. Roger Johnson of Wellesley College. He is a member of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Religion / Society of Biblical Literature, and the American Academy of Research Historians on Medieval Spain. He was a winner of a Templeton Prize for writing in Theology and Science. He has published more than fifty journal articles, online publications, and five books, and is listed in Who's Who in Theology and Science (Continuum). His interests include both Modern and Medieval Philosophy and comparative religion. During 2009, he will be releasing a monograph on Ramon Llull.

Since 1984, David A. Buehler has been refining software tools for Theology & Biblical Studies, and editing software for Tischrede [ Ger., "table-talk" ]. His LEXEGETE Bible Software was awarded the CAMCON Prize for Innovation at the Computer Assisted Ministry Conference in Atlanta, GA in 1987. David is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, where he studied Theology, Philosophy and Ethics, and won the 1972 Billings Prize for Preaching. David continued his studies during two years of Clinical Pastoral Education at Yale from 1978-80. He went on to the Graduate Theological Foundation (South Bend, Indiana) and also studied at Oxford, Cambridge, Georgetown, and the Graduate Theological Union [Berkeley, CA]. He was the editor of the CQ/Sources column for Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics during its first decade.
