This is kind of ridiculously good

This started off so great and carried well for about a little more than halfway and I so wanted it to work, but then I am not really sure what happened - it just became well, weird. Despite always hating the Laura character in these stories, this one had potential. For the first half of the story the dynamic between Stiles and Derek was pretty spot on in their "reluctant allies" banter. Then all of a sudden there was this weird Wiccan twist to the story that popped up as soon as the two finally got together (and honestly that's where the story should have stopped), but it kept going and going and became silly. I think it was supposed to be comical, but after this great tension build up and amusing first half, the new twist really didn't fit.

This is on par with Balloon Animals Are Awesome by|DiscontentedWinter as far as mixing the right proportions of bravado vs vulnerability, humor vs depth, feels vs smexy time and action driven plot vs relationship growth to be an entertaining Sterek. It is a fun ride as the POV traps you in the head of Stiles' comical genius. The external plot is well paced and kept light and fun and magical and even silly at times. While the internal arc is tense and reflective while never forgetting that these boys have faced some real sadness in their lives and need a happy ending.
To summarize, there is a rogue unicorn (that was hit with an ugly stick) murdering virgins in Beacon Hills. Stiles finds himself amongst the targeted population much to his embarrassment. But the pack is having trouble tracking the unicorn to hunt ... so lucky for them, Stiles, is the perfect bait.
Why it stands out? Stiles is no damsel in distress in this one. He is resourceful. Derek is not just dashing and not besotted. Derek is still bossy and protective and possessive - but I felt he was more "respectful" of Stiles in this one and viewed him more of an equal rather than someone to save or crush on. I liked that Stiles was able to save himself and anything that Derek added complimented him. Both of them figured things out about themselves on this adventure.
Bottom line: a fun, magical ride with lines that will make you laugh and moments that will give you feels - not just relationship wise, but also individual growth wise. Oh, and did I mention the super sexy ending? :)
