A large collection of short, generally three-to-five-page accounts by Holocaust survivors from the Ukraine. Almost all of them were children during the war; the year of birth is usually provided. This book is worth reading not only because there is relatively little information available in English about the Holocaust in Ukraine, but because these particular survivors remained in Ukraine after the war and for the rest of their lives -- unlike the majority of Jews, who headed for the hills. I found myself wondering if there was something different about them compared to the Jews who emigrated, but if there was I couldn't find it.

Give this a go if you want to know about day-to-day conditions for Jews in Ukraine during the war. I only wish there were more sources that weren't just in Russian and Ukrainian.… (altro)
