Based on a real person, this tall tale tells the story of legendary train engineer Casey Jones and his heroic last ride on the Cannonball Express. Additional features to aid comprehension include background information and historical context of the tale, and an introduction to the author and illustrator.

This was a cute story. It's about a family who moves out in the country and the kids are seeing strange things around their new treehouse. The illustrations throughout were great. The only annoying thing was the girl chanting everything... it got old really quick. I figured out the mystery and it had a nice ending.

This book is categorized. It ought to be under horror. This scared ME, and I'm an adult.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Pudmuddle move into their backwards house where they live happily until they discover certain deficiencies--there is no basement and the roof has blown off.

Really sweet characters. I love how the brother is patient with the little sister, but she isn't really annoying like in most stories. And I love how he was reluctant to move to the country, but, gosh, a tree house, and a river to wade in, and woods to explore... yeah, I agree with the Mom, that's going to be a great place to live. Once they figure out why weird things keep happening at the tree house when they're not there.

I remember the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and the tracks in the mud. The boy in the story liked his sandwiches crunchy with more peanut butter I think. Wow! More than 20 years ago...

Shortly after Erin and her mother move in with an aunt after the death of Erin's father, Erin's mother begins dating a man who claims to have known her deceased spouse. Both mom and aunt are charmed by Mr. Jarvis, but Erin is not so sure about his motives. With no friends yet in her new town, she writes letters to Dorrie, an acquaintance in the town she left behind. Dorrie, who feels she did not know Erin all that well, is unsure how or if to answer the letters.

Woven into the threads of the outer story are some gently and skillfully handled moments: Erin's feelings of loss and displacement, her mother's loneliness, Jarvis' neediness, Dorrie's desire to be a good friend under unusual circumstances.

The book is outdated in that it was written prior to the widespread use of the internet, cell phones, and e-mail. However, the themes of loneliness and desire to be loved are timeless and are written very well in this book. I recommend it.

Very creepy, atmospheric little tale, with a lot more going on in it than meets the eye. I love running across forgotten little gems like this. You can't find books like this anymore today.

This was a strange book: there's something foreboding. Everything's not right. Wilma, the visiting niece/cousin gets blamed, but she's not the culprit- or at least not in any obvious way. Apparently the house is haunted or something similar, but things are never quite resolved or explained.½

A nice little solve-the-mysteries book, good illustrations and simple, easy to follow plots. I hadn't realized the mysteries would be so simple, though... It's the first time I've read one of these "solve it yourself" books where I actually solved every one correctly. And easily.½

From the back cover: "Although the game of witches is fun at first, it eventually leads Clara and Louise to such moments of fear that they wish they had never started it." I was surprised how spooky the book actually was - especially considering the age of the intended audience. Not only the disturbing success of the girls' magic (the family canary vanishes without a trace, to their complete consternation) but the presence of a truly frightening handyman who terrorizes the children make this book satisfyingly creepy.

From vintage scholastic cover [and page 1]: In the winter, Sparrow Lake was like a Christmas-card picture, with snow-covered rooftops and trees, skaters on the ice, and the dark line of the woods rising beyond the Lake Road.

My room faced the lake, and from my windows at nightI could see the Lodge lights and tall the black, tall forms of trees and closed-for-the-winter houses. How many times have I sat by my windows and looked out, watching snow fall, thinking about Johnny Hunter. How many times...I cannot hope to count them all.
