The book is written by Marcus Woodcock who was one of the soldiers of the 9th Kentucy. He was a native of Tennessee but went to Kentucky to fight for the Union. Since this isn't a regimental history of the 9th Kentucy this places more importance on this work. Woodcock does a good job on relating the facts on many of the battles where the force was split such as a Chickamauga where the 9th was routed and part of the regiment fought on Snodgrass Hill while most of the regiment escapted to Chattanooga.
