"Shore, Reefs, and The Deep" is a book about life underwater and the different types of plants and animals that live in the ocean. This book can be used for a wide variety of students because it is filled with many pictures, captions, and chunks of text. Young students who can not read can use the pictures to think critically about the text. While older readers could read the chunks of text or just the captions. If the full text is above the students reading level they could read the captions independently and could read the big chunks of text in bigger groups.

This is a huge book, so i did not get to read through every single page but it is a fabulous book about the human body. It goes through all of the sytems and how they work, so it would be very valuable when discussing the human body in the classroom. A teacher could reference this book when questions come up about the body. There were great photos and illustrations.

“Shores, Reefs, and the Deep,” written by Christina Wilsdon, is a fun; easy to read book that I enjoyed reading. Through different literary devices, the author was able to convey the main idea, which is to introduce the reader to different sea creatures and basic concepts about the ocean.
One literary element that I thought helped convey the message was the book’s layout. On every page that introduced a new concept, a bold heading was included to help the reader understand what information was going to be talked about and be provided on that page. This also helps the reader locate information that interests him or her. Furthermore, each page also contains a “bubble” or “box” insert with a “did you know?” or “more information” section, which pulls the reader in. These aspects of the layout make the book easy for the reader to follow along with and understand the information the author is trying to convey.
Another literary element that I thought helped convey the information was the text style and word choice. This book presents the reader with many content specific vocabulary words that the reader may be unfamiliar with. These vocabulary words are printed in bold to signal the reader of their importance. Along with this, these bolded words are also found in the glossary, which gives the reader a simple definition to help him or her better understand the words; thus, allowing the reader to understand and comprehend the information better. The text provided is also printed in large font in order to make it easy to follow. The word choice that the author used presents this information in a simplistic way, giving the reader a better opportunity to understand the information easily. The text style and word choice, used by the author, effectively helps the reader to comprehend the information the author has provided, fulfilling the book's purpose.
Lastly, the pictures provided throughout the story make the book fun and engaging for the reader. There are several brightly colored illustrations and real-life photos throughout the book, which keep the reader interested. This also allows the reader to make visual connections with the text. Altogether, these literary devices that the author chose to use, make it simple to grasp the main idea. The author’s intention of informing and introducing the reader to different sea creatures and basic ocean elements truly comes alive in this easy to read, fun picture book.

This amazing collection of equine information and illustrations was compiled for girls who are obsessed with horses and everything about them. The author discusses different breeds of horses, how a horse's body works from head to hoof, equestrian sports, horses in entertainment, horse-girl lingo, gear to wear when riding, as well as horse fiction and lore in this comprehensive guide for horse-lovers. This volume can be read in any order by opening the book and jumping to whatever grabs the reader's interest, but also includes an extensive bibliography and index. The engaging facts, side-bars and diagrams will inspire girls to follow their horse-filled dreams on a life-long adventure.
