I am so very glad that I did not purchase this book. It is self-published and without an editor - and it shows: the author places the burial of her grandfather a year before he died. The writing is very choppy, without smooth transitions, and the grammar is lacking. The only reason I finished it is so I could say I completed it for my reading challenge. The title is totally misleading. I thought I was going to read a book about growing up in Detroit, when in actuality, it is a cathartic experiment for the author as she pays tribute to her grandfather who basically served as a loving father-figure. She does say this in her introduction, however I had hopes that the book would really be about growing up in a dynamic city with its vast struggles and challenges rather than one individual's perspective and over-analysis of her mentally-challenged family.… (altro)
