This book is a reference book, giving the history of the Puritans from before leaving England thru the 1600's. In the preface, the author says that it is for the study of the Massachusetts Bible State. This is to study the Puritan experiment. This wasn't done in England because the Puritans never had the power. This type of state is difficult to define, but ends up with an oligarchy. John Winthrop, William Bradford, Cotton Mather & others are quoted as giving contemporaneous accounts of early Massachusetts history. The historians task is to analyze & interpret. this was much easier to read than the First volume in "A History of American Life." Perhaps it's because I know something about the beginning of American History, or maybe it's because the footnotes are in English! It's more a reference book, but it is readable. I learned a few things about the early settlers.
Well written and documented on the rise and fall of the Puritans in America. Made me realize that some religions are in place to ensure economic prosperity for its elite and congregation.
This one is till the basic and essential history of Bacon's 1676 rebellion in Virginia, tracing the background of the events, the place of the Native Americans in the picture, his role in settling and colony-building, the significance of the events for the American Revolution, and Bacon's place as "the greatest figure of the first century of American history."
