Wow: timely, thorough, and written in a truly engaging tone. I am extremely impressed with Dr. Aimee Weinstein's approach to preparing students for writing college essays. I have been working in the area of 'English for Academic Purposes' for years, and this is one of the best resources I've come upon. The author's tone in sharing the what-why-how of college-essays is pitch-perfect, never inaccessible nor patronizing. The guide itself is truly comprehensive, with smart pre-writing activities, examples of essays on various themes, revision guidelines and tips that will serve students well throughout their academic careers.

Think of this as a guide from your favorite teacher or someone you trust to explain what the ACT essay is and how you can best prepare. Going from essay description and the three perspectives to choose from, how to analyze and plan your essay. It includes 20 essay examples that take you through the steps you learned on how to analyze, plan and write your essay.

This is a great resource for the ACT Essay, but also for college and your future professional life. As someone who worked in government - local and state - one is often required to analyze what is the real issue, weigh the pros and cons, put forth the arguments while listening to all sides, and decide (with or without others) on a conclusion/approach.

IMPRESSIVELY COMPLETE GUIDE
This guide not only offers a comprehensive approach to ACT essay writing: its strategies apply to all good essay writing, so it has wider usefulness. I'm an EFL teacher who tends to resist test-prep as results can be so uncertain, and because most of the published prep materials I've seen a) inspire little confidence and b) are very often plain annoying. I was happy to find that the Winning Strategies For ACT Essay Writing are clearly explained: with practice the whole process does indeed become less intimidating, and writing flows more smoothly. I also liked the range of topics represented by the15 Sample Prompts. Any student who works their way through the units is bound to feel confident that their writing (and time-management!) skills have improved noticeably, and to do well on the ACT.

I was given a free copy of this book by Vibrant Publishers and Dr Aimee Weinstein. First, thank you for the book. Second, this is excellent test prep book. It walks the student through the whole process of essay writing. It gives an example text subject and shows the student how to make pro and con arguments from the text as well as how to deconstruct what the text is about. It then shows the student how to set up the paragraphs for the essay. I have taught essay writing and I would have loved to have had a guide like this for my students.

I received this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers Program.

Although I am well past the tentative age of needing to worry about writing essays for the ACTs. I have a number of younger cousins who would benefit from writing strategies for essays like this. An aspect about the examples and the book as a whole that I appreciated was how simple and straightforward the context was. For any novice essay writer who isn't familiar with the breakdown of an essay or an individual who has written an essay before, the Writing Strategies for ACT Essay book is a good tool to have.

It's informative, clear, and constructed in a way that would make it easy for anyone who may be using this book as a solo study guide to look at a detailed example of an essay broken down. Then practice for themselves by using

Other components that make this book a great resource is the way the actual ACT testing process and essay portion are explained for the potential reader. Test and essay can be daunting no matter how much you prepare for them. But understanding the part of the essay portion has more to do with how well you express and describe your opinion rather than if you give a correct answer like with a multi-choice question.

This is an important detail when the ACT essay prompts have to do with complex and layered social issues. Sometimes it's topics the individual is familiar with or aware and sometimes it isn't. But to be able to critically think of ways to pull ideas together, even with a broad subject, is an important and useful ability. Winning Strategies for ACT Essay Writing is a book I would have loved to have for myself years ago.

As someone who will be needing to write essays for the ACT, this book was extremely helpful to me. I would recommend this guide to almost anyone. It was easy to understand and it showed me many tips that I had never heard of before. It would also be very useful to those who are teaching students who will be taking the ACT. I had been struggling with how to organize my essays, but after reading this book I was able to easily organize them with very little stress regarding it. The 15 sample essay prompts vary widely and gave me many different scenarios to consider.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and believe that it would be beneficial to both students and teachers.

I received this book from the publisher as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program.

This is a book that inspires a person to think--and to think in a clear, coherent matter. That is not an easy thing, especially when a person is expected to expound on a controversial topic in a mere 40 minutes. This is what is asked of high school students who take the essay portion of the ACT. Many colleges these days are going test-optional when it comes to the SAT and ACT, but often, good test scores can still make a student's transcript look more appealing to an admissions office.

This is something very much on my mind as my son will be a junior in the fall. He is autistic and more math-inclined. I know he'll be taking ACT later on during this next school year. I read this book, Winning Strategies for ACT Essay Writing with him in mind: is this a book that I would buy him, to help him prepare?

My whole-hearted answer is YES. I appreciate that this book is about more than developing skills that will help with ACT; the step-by-step advice on organizing thoughts to present an argument is a great life skill, period, to be used when writing or speaking.

The book features 15 prompts. The first prompts include comprehensive write-ups as they present a controversial, current topic along with three possible perspectives on it. From there, the argument is deconstructed. For the actual test, the book encourages students to spend 10 minutes organizing their argument with pros and cons, and then use the remaining 30 minutes to write. These initial examples break down that entire process into outline form followed by a full essay.

As the book goes on, though, more and more of the steps are left out, and the student is asked to fill in the blanks. The book does include literal blank spaces for writing, too, though I think the ebook version would be perfectly serviceable, as the practicing student can simply use a personal notebook. (The text mentions that more planning and answer pages are available on the publisher's website; I checked on this, and a log-in is required to access them. Better to use our own paper and notebooks than to use printer paper in this way, I think.)

By the final few prompts, students are largely expected to do the work on their own. The back of the book includes more examples of completed outlines and essays.

I found myself often taking breaks as I read so that I could ponder the topics myself. What do I think of school uniforms? Is golf a sport or a game? How would I argue on behalf of arts funding in schools? I look forward to discussing these subjects, and more, as my son works his way through his own copy of the book later this school year.

My thanks again to the publisher for a galley of the book!
