I highly doubt that the techniques in this book will completely fix all of my health problems as the author suggests. That being said, I do believe that many of these exercises will be helpful in my struggles with anxiety and migraine issues. only time will tell, but I do feel good about what I've learned

Updated review:
Dr. Vranich makes a convincing case that the way you breathe has a huge impact on your health, well-being, and even athletic performance. Having a backing of research studies helps solidify some of the arguments presented here. However, after reading The Oxygen Advantage, I do feel that some of the principles in this book don't quite hold up to the light of scientific scrutiny. She dismisses the evidence that high altitude training can be beneficial for performance and seems to have longevity effects. The Bohr Effect (the importance of carbon dioxide in the body) is not noted at all either, and this seems a crucial oversight.

That said, the main message here -- you should breathe from the belly/diaphragm, and through your nose -- is on point. For a more advanced look at the relevant science, and particularly for athletes looking to optimize performance, I'd recommend The Oxygen Advantage instead, though.½

Everyone should read this book! It explains how our breathing changes throughout our lives due to stress, trauma and anxiety and how we start to hold our bellies tight and breathe up in our chest area. That type of breathing doesn’t allow your body enough oxygen and can lead to many different types of health problems, including heart problems, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure, obesity, GI tract difficulties and even memory problems. This is a 14-day program that will re-teach your body to breathe as you did when you were a child, using the diaphragm instead of chest muscles.

I’ve become more aware of my breathing since starting up yoga practice once again a few months ago. I found this book to be so helpful in re-training my body to breathe the way I should be breathing. I’ve only be using the book a few days and already feel the expansion in my ribs and lungs. The muscles in my back are a bit sore due to the increased use of those particular muscles that haven’t been used in many years due to the short, shallow, upper body breaths I’ve been taking.

The book includes simple, quick exercises that you can use to strengthen those muscles used in breathing to give you increase your lung capacity. I thought the beginning of the book read like an infomercial and was a bit repetitive. But stick with it as when the author gets to the exercises, they are excellent. Quite a few of them I’ve been using in my yoga practice so were familiar to me. There’s also an excellent section for athletes. The book is very easy to read and understand.

I’ve always been an admirer of Dr. Andrew Weil and there’s a quote by him included in the book that I’d like to share. “If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn to breathe correctly.”

Here’s to better breathing for all! Highly recommended book.

This book was given to me by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Dating the Older Man: Consider Your Differences and Decide if He’s Right for You by Belisa Vranich and Laura Grashow is a guide for women either considering or already dating an older man. At least that’s the marketing. In fact the subtitle more accurately reflects the book: Consider your differences and decide if he’s right for you. Period.

Before you read further, let’s clear something up: This book is not about how to GET an older man. It is about what to DO when you find yourself considering or actually dating an older man and you’re not sure how that happened or whether you want to pursue the relationship. It’s about looking at the issues (which you may or may not have considered) and deciding whether this is a good match for you. And it’s about doing this thinking earlier rather than later so you don’t waste time with someone who isn’t going to be a good partner for you.

This book is much more widely applicable than the title would suggest. It is foremost about developing a mature and lasting relationship with a romantic partner (age difference is the angle, but the advice is pretty universally applicable).

Dating the Older Man is aimed at women who want a real relationship, not those who want the Sugar Daddy or the Father Figure or whatever other stereotypes there are floating around about the older man. The tone is conversational with occasional humour, but it is intent on providing information and insight. Much of the book applies to any woman dating any man and looking for a lasting relationship: make sure he respects you, make sure you are forging an equal partnership, make sure you disagree productively, don’t sabotage yourself, etc.

There are some issues that are particular to relationships with older men such as ex-wives, children (possibly grown), disapproval of friends and family, different priorities. Basically, the older your dating partner is (and the older you are, I would add), the more “stuff” (psychological or physical) you bring into the relationship. Although the advice uses the younger woman-older man scenario as examples, it can be adapted to other differences that cause friends and family to frown.

Dating the Older Man is something that I would have found useful if it had been available back then, and I recommend it to anyone who is trying to establish a long term relationship with an older man (or any man). It is a respectful and considered book on a topic that is often sensationalized and stereotyped.
