This was an excellent set of essays, favorites including: Bruce Leonard's "The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder of Frodo Baggins" (after reading which I feel that I understand Frodo's journey and the Scouring of the Shire much better); Alexander Bruce's "'Or Break It': The Cost of Silmarils and Sworn Oaths"; Dylan Henderson's "'A Bleak, Barren Land': Women and Fertility in the Lord of the Rings"; and Steven Holmes's "Negative Estrangement: Fantasy and Race in the Drow and Drizzt Do'Urden" (though I has been many years since I read the first two trilogies of Drizzt, I possessed just enough background to make this article digestible and thought-provoking). I have skipped (for now) Ethan Danner's piece on the Gondothlim and Ashna Jacob's and Nirmala Menon's article on mythopoeia.

Not having read any of HoME yet, I passed for now over the first three letters/notes, but the following nine in response to Charles Mill's "The Wretched of Middle-earth: An Orkish Manifesto" have sparked my interest in that article.
