Lisa Survillas

Gahhhhh....I have spent the last week pondering this review. This is the first book by Lisa Survillas that I have read and I really enjoyed it. The subject matter may be a little hard for some to handle. The subject of abuse is a tough one for most to readers/people to stomach. I found this story to be well written and emotionally charged. The characters are well developed and the author handles the subject of abuse really well. I was left feeling all the emotions of the characters, whether it was pain, hurt, loss, heartache, joy, happiness and love.

Lexi Crandall has spent the last few years trying to escape her past. She still struggles with being in loud, crowded places. Her one savior and rock is her roommate Paige. She has been with Lexi since freshman year and has helped her through the really tough times that followed. When Lexi is partnered with a fellow classmate to work on a project she is thrown out of her comfort zone. The project requires them to get to know one another and then present their findings to the class.

Derek Fressen has his own tragic past to deal with. Losing those closest to you is always a struggle and Derek has had more than his fair share of loss in his not so distant past. He doesn't talk much about the loss he has suffered, he basically has run away from it. Something he finds that he has in common with Lexi. When he gets to spend a little time getting to know Lexi, he feels drawn to her, protective of her and wants to learn more about her. Through this class project they both have to learn to open up and learn that their own grief is not just all about them. That others suffer some sort of hardship in their lives as well.

Will Lexi learn to open up to someone other than Paige? Will Derek be able to put his past behind him and move forward? Can Lexi let down her walls long enough to let Derek in and learn to go on with her life? You have to grab this book to find out. Be prepared you are going to want book 2 as soon as you finish this one. 4 Emotionally Charged Stars
