The visuals are of live, wild animals. The filmmakers had to record hours of wildlife to get appropriate actions to match the text. The 'Behind the Scenes' extra describes how they achieved this. The voice-overs for the animals used distinctive voices, including Latinx raccoons. For a young audience, who should appreciate this story of a newborn fawn, who isn't really lost. Amusing for adults, tho you won't likely want to see it more than once.½

This book is full of beautiful winter photographs. The story begins with the animals saying that there's a stranger in the woods. They wonder when the stranger arrived and who will go check out the stranger. They discover the stranger is friendly, it has nuts and seeds and a carrot too. Then they find another object in the snow and wonder if there's more than one stranger in the woods. After the food was gone, the animals left one by one. From behind the trees, little voices talk about how the animals have eaten everything and how they need to put out more food before the animals come back. They decide to keep putting out food until the snowman has melted away.

A lovely book of photos instead of hand-made illustrations. It is winter, a time of hunger ad cold. The animals, particularly the deer, are curious about something new in the forest. It isn't a person, but three clumps of snow piled on top of each other. This snow thing wears a hat, and on the top are many seeds for the forest animals.

As the birds in the trees alert all in the wood that something isn't right, the deer seek and find this new thing that provides a carrot and seeds.

The nights grew longer. The winds blew colder. It was a time of changing seasons."Have you gathered your nuts yet, Spotty?" the chipmunk asked the fawn as he scurried through the woods burying nuts here and there. "I heard it from the rabbit, who heart it from the owl...winter's coming early this year, you better get ready!" But was he ready? Was he paying attention to his heartsong?

A book which explores a fawn's world living in the forest. This book personifies the animals and has them talk to each other throughout the book. This would be great for kindergarten-second, having children talk about where they think the fawn is after the book. It also is great for a lesson/lessons about animals and their habitats.

This book follows a baby deer in the woods who is waiting for his mother to return. While he waits he meets many different animals. They talk to each other and he begins to learn many new things. However, he fears he might be lost and that his mother might not return. As he gains strength and size he begins roaming the woods. He is careful, however, not to stray too far in case his mom comes searching for him. At the end, his mother comes back for him and takes him with her to adventure and experience new things. The main message of this story is to listen and trust your mother when exploring the world around you. Exploring the world, allows you to learn new things and discover other living things. This lesson is seen through the key details of the baby deer’s interactions with others and his trust in his mother. The real-life pictures throughout the book exposes the reader to many new animals and the surrounding wildlife. In this book, the animals talk to each other like human-beings which make this a fantasy.

This book takes the reader through the different perspectives of the different animals that live in the wooded area. They are all very curious about who could possibly be in the woods. Comes to find out that a snowman has appeared in the woods and many of the animals find the snowman to be a nice snack.

This book is a tender and colorful photographic essay tale about trust, patience, and waiting for one's time. All the woodland creatures are concerned for a newborn fawn they believe is lost. The reader is delighted when the end of the book reveals the instinctive wisdom of the fawn's mother.

All the animals ask, "Who is this Stranger? Why did he arrive after a winter storm and what wonderful surprises does he bring?" Beautiful photographs illustrate the animals as they find the courage to satisfy their curiosity about the stranger.

I enjoyed this book. The title was mysterious and kept the reader guessing what the book was about. I loved the suspense of the book. Each page kept the readers guessing while slowly divulging clues and getting closer to solving the mystery: who the stranger in the woods was. Since the book had such a suspenseful feel to it, it was hard to not stay engaged. It would be a perfect book for a read aloud because of this aspect. I had never seen a book like this before. The illustrations were not illustrations at all, in fact, they were photographs. The photographs were stunning and somehow the author managed to have a perfect photograph that went perfectly with each page of text. This is great for young readers. The text was simple, but if they were unsure of the setting or animal being discussed, they are able to simply look at the picture and figure it out. The big idea of the book was to introduce young children to the winter season and the common animals seen during that time of year.

This story was beyond fantastic, the main message was that just because something is new does not mean that it is not bad. The pictures were absolutely breathtaking, the pictures were actual photos that were taken during the winter of animals discovering a snowman. Every picture was captured perfectly that it made it seem as if the animals were going to jump right off of the page and into the room with the reader. The characters in this story just added a bit more magic into the book. Each character was given an individual personality that matched what the actual animals are like in the real world and they were both relatable yet slightly foreign as forest animals.

I did not like this book for a few reasons. First, I did not like the books illustrations. The illustrations are real animals in real places but look poorly photoshopped in and its not very appealing. Second, I thought the books use of language was uninteresting and came off as boring. We read the book and class and I did once again to my Nephew, whom was uninterested in the book. The big message of the story was to interest kids in new things and encourage them to go outside.

This is a cute book to read to students during the winter time. I enjoyed this book because students are able to make predictions of who the "stranger in the woods" is. It gives students a chance to build prediction skills. I also love the animal sounds throughout the book. Children are able to learn new sounds of different animals.

The characters talk to each other in a voice similar to their sounds. For example, the owl will say "Who-hoo's in the woods?" and the chickadee would say "Howdy-dee-dee?" I loved how the author incorporated this into his story because it made the story even more realistic.

Overall, very well written. Readers will be very engaged and interested on every page of the book. Readers will also learn about the different animals that come out during the winter time! You could do many different lessons with your students using this book.

The big idea of the book was to use actual photographs of actual animals to tell a make believe story about how they all might react to a situation.

I loved this book for a couple reasons. The first reason that I loved this book was for the photographs. Instead of illustrations of animals, I liked that the author used actual photos to create a story. Even though this book is a fantasy, it makes it seem all the more real since real animals are seen "talking". I also believe that since most picture books don't have actual photographs, this is interesting to young readers because they get to see real animals.

Another reason that I loved this book was for the language. I loved that basically the entire book is just dialogue between animals and that some of the characters "speak" using animal sounds. For example, everyone knows that the sound an owl makes is a "hoo" sound. So in the book, the owl says "Who-hoo-hoo will goo?" I just thought it was a cute way to make the animals talk.

The stunning photography left the greatest impact on me after listening to this story in class. I really liked that this book would be a great way to introduce students to making predictions or inferences. We are not sure if the stranger is a predator or a person. I also enjoyed that while the animals in the forest were all being introduced, the author took the time to put in characteristics about these animals, like the red cardinal. I would also read this book to a class if we were learning about the characteristics of animals. The ending was fun because it was not expected. I believe the message of this book was that sometimes other people's (or animals) fears seem silly to us because we do not feel the same way, but we should take into account that we should be sensitive and try to see things from their perspective.

In my opinion this is a great book because of the spin the authors put on your typical modern fantasy picture book. Would you call the photographs within the book its "illustrations? Nonetheless, the photographs/illustrations enable this modern fantasy book to stand out among others. I think the photographs add such a clever but fun element to the story. The pictures of the animals really portray what is being read, as if that is what the animals are really saying/thinking. The organization of the writing style also stands out. I liked how every animals had its own "voice". For example how owl's words dragged out slowly with a "hooooo" and how the confidence of the strong buck came out as you read his lines. It made the story fun and a bit silly but interesting to read. Overall super cute book. The big idea behind it I believe was to give modern fantasy a spin and capture the essence of the genre while adding a different element.

I like this book. The photographs were stunning. The author captured the animals in their natural habitat and spun them into a cute story. The language of the book is unique. The author used the natural sounds of the animals to affect their speech patterns. The main idea of this book is to introduce the animals of the forest and their sounds for a fun time.

Many people are unaware that a mother doe will leave her baby alone so it cannot be found by predators until it is able to run. This book tells a story about a "lost" deer in the hopes of informing more people so they don't try to take or "help" the baby. Great informative read with photos of real animals.

In my opinion, this is a good book. I really enjoyed the illustrations. If I'm not mistaken, all of the illustrations were actually photographs rather than drawings or paintings. I felt that this style really made the story feel more realistic. The other aspect of the story that I liked was the characters. I thought that it was very creative of the author to create dialogue for all of the animals. In addition, I thought that the dialogue generally went hand in hand with the animal who spoke it. For instance, the owl kept saying "WHOO" to begin his questions. I just thought it was clever. All in all, this book is great for any children who enjoy animals or nature. In general, this book was meant to show readers how different animals react to changes in their environment.½
