This article looks at how Australian Rules football became the battleground for the struggle for greater rights for Darwin's non-European community which was, until 1916, largely excluded from the town's sport. It examines in particular the years 1926-1939 when Australian rules was continually disrupted by issues pertaining to 'colour'. The significance of oral history and personal records in documenting ‘social memory’ is discussed. The author contends this provides a window to this contentious period of Darwin's social history lying at the heart of Darwin's reputation as a multi-racial city.

A very substantial part of this book relates to the history of Indigenous football players, and other players who were not white or European, such as the players of Chinese heritage, in the Northern Territory, especially in Darwin. The second half of the book is predominantly about football, race and racism in the Northern Territory. First written as a Doctoral Thesis, with the same title, at Charles Darwin University in 2009.
