This book is almost too mushy to be taken seriously, but I can't help but adore it all the same. This book is as happy-go-lucky as you can get and a perfect book for children looking for a comforting tale (or for those who are children at heart).

I was bored to tears.

It's a story of a girl called Dora, whose father dies and she must live with her aunt and uncle. They are quite old, insensible and selfish and poor Dora almost dies under their care. Luckily for her, they need to go to Switzerland and Dora's life gets much better.

The main problem I had with this book was Dora herself - she was so quiet, obedient and completely uninteresting! I'm sorry to say that, but I didn't care about her at all. The other children in the book were quite irritating, especially this boy who kept creating riddles, I forgot his name already, but I really wanted to throw something heavy at him once or twice. The ending seemed very false and unreal for me and I generally didn't enjoy this book much.

I can't recommend this book and I'm not going to read it ever again.

Three and a half stars; I did enjoy this book, but I kept wondering who it was written for. I wouldn't say it was a children's book (murder, stealing, drinking alcohol, illness and death - not for my children at least), but it also didn't seem to be for adults.

Heidi is a beloved children's classic - which is why I read it, as I would love to write books for children and young adults myself. But though this book clearly has its strengths - the power of the landscape prime among them - I don't think I'll ever want to write something as kitsch and naively innocent as this. Heidi herself is a bit too good to be true, and there seems to be nothing evil, dark, or even dirty in this world - a world in which God looms large, and good things come to those who pray, no matter how unlikely.½

Dora becomes an orphan when her father dies of his war wounds, and she is left in the care of her father's elderly step-sister and her scholar husband.

Orphaned at an early age and taken in by her young aunt Dete, Heidi--short for Adelheid--is soon in the way. Dete has a new and better job where Heidi is not welcome, so the child must live with her curmudgeon of a grandfather high on the Alm Mountain in the Swiss Alps.

Everyone calls him the Alm-Uncle because he never comes down to the village, even in the coldest winter, and he's developed a reputation as an evil, godless old hermit. But Heidi soon finds that things are not always what others say they are, makes friends with the Alm-Uncle, and happily runs wild in the glorious mountains with the goat boy, Peter, and his goats.

Suddenly Dete appears again, and Heidi finds herself confined in a stone house in a stone city where she is expected to be companion to the invalid Klara. Dete sees this as a great opportunity for Heidi, one that will provide her with an education and polish. But, bitterly unhappy away from her grandfather and the outdoor life she has grown to love, Heidi at last makes her way back to the Alm. How Klara finally comes to the mountains as well, and the surprising events that follow, form the heartwarming ending to a story that has been loved for generations by children all over the world.

Partway through it got rather preachy and God-heavy, which I did not enjoy.

I bought these not realizing they are in German. The small and numerous inset watercolor pictures were all that mattered. They are marvelous, just how I see Heidi.

It was so much fun to read this book a second time around (in January 2011), this time to my boys. My Grandma Strohm read it to me as a child when I spent the night at her house.
